Hans Zimmer & Borderlands

Saw this on twitter just now. New BMW commercial with sound design/music by Zimmer ... featuring a brief appearance by Borderlands app

  • Wow the iPad made it to the big leagues now!

  • Woah, way to go Borderlands!

  • Makes me glad I have an M35i, quite a weird connection.

  • Awesome! Congrats, Chris... Not sure if he's in the forum

This is strange, but cool. Love Hans Zimmer!
Do you experience a thrilling soundscape when you drive your car?

Nice to see Borderlands for a split second in here, but is it actual used, or was it for the futuristic looks.
Honestly, when i drive a car, i just want to get from A to B. The emotion part of Car-commercials is a marketing trick. Cars are just lumpy metal plastic rubber energy consumers that u use to get moving.
The emotion with a car comes when you push the pedal to the floor on a race track. Raw Power and speed. And old cars off course, like a bottle of wine from a good year.

  • AUv3 tho?

  • I'm sorry but this video makes me vomit.

Yes, it does make some rather cool noises for sure. Most people don’t realize that BMWs have what they call active sound design. They augment the sound of the engine with the audio system. Seems like a gimmick, but it definitely sounds cool.

I can get the appeal but I do prefer the opposite end of making cars as silent as possible. I rode in an electric once and loved it, felt like a Jetson.

  • Trust me, I wish it was that way too in an ideal world. I don’t like how they are adding noises to electric cars just because people can’t look up from their phones when crossing the street.

  • And whatever happened to darwinism, thinning the herd etc. Let nature take its course. Etc

Well, it's actually more for blind and vision-impaired people

  • Funny that they are working with Zimmer who doesn't drive

  • This actually opens up an even larger topic:
    Sound Identity Design!

Has anyone done this kind of work before?

I always think about Law and Order “Dong Dong” or Netflix and Hulu’s sound identification when you open those apps on your tv.

  • For years, BMW has used their Active Sound Design feature to reproduce the engine's sound in the car's audio system.

To turn it off on the 2012 M5, you need to get into the fusebox. Hopefully the newer models allow an easier way to disable it.

BMW has a sound design lab too. There's a video with the word 'Obsession' in its title that's worth a look if interested.
    Here's a condensed version.

    Looks cool, thank you sir!

  • On the newer BMWs you can disable ASD with third party iOS apps and OBD plugs. I use Bimmercode to alter a lot of the stock settings, but there's other apps like Carly that do the same thing.

It's actually kind of cool how much you can change the default behaviour of the onboard electronics with apps now.

  • Of course we all know that BMW justifies having a Sound Design department just because someone said "Employ my nephew"
"What are his skills?" "He posts synth memes and dwelve in the Audiobus Forum"

    Just kidding lol
BTW, that hand manipulating Borderlands is probably Renzo's, because it sure ain't Zimmer's

Yeah, you could tell be the ring on his finger it was Renzo 😂

Agree with @vacca. Love Zimmer, but the sounds are bs and certainly nothing new. Seems like he just took their BMW dough for a ride. Good for him.
