Where's the button that adds the Grolsch bottle tops to your boots?

  • Suddenly I'm facing memories of what I've never experienced myself, except that magic time knob. Oh my, that machine looks like a Drambo patch. I have to stop it now.

I had that (very briefly) :D

  • ♪ ♫ "Well I've been working on this snare drum for all my life, (Oh lord).." ♬ ♩

That Cocaine level is just a a little low in the mix

I also got the whole can of AquaNet upgrade

  • Nice work :)
Had a 2nd hand DMX in my stu-stu-studio. When I changed the tuning pots on the inside I did notice some ‘fairy dust’.

Haha. I missed out on all that cool stuff.

I had an RX-21 in the late 80s. When I wanted a snare I hit the “SD” button. It was my one and only snare.

Life was much easier then

Hahaha, you guys are cracking me up!! (pardon the pun)

    :D

  • I was still playing drums in bars and a lot of those knobs played into the calculus of
my musical life in analog form.

  • 80s production ruined many a good song.

  • I remember long ago - you wouldn’t believe it now - we used to get a snare sound by hitting a skin stretched over a cylinder with a wooden stick.

Full story, the inspiration for this meme comes from Nancy Wilson (of Heart). She was talking about how they just laid down those early albums back in the 70s, but by the time they got to the 80s and digital, it was technological advancement yes, but endless options and choices, and it would be like taking forever just to get a snare sound. And hence about the 80s she quipped, "I mean, how much cocaine does it take to get a good snare sound?" And thus the idea for a meme was born!

  • Interesting, I hadn’t heard that story.
Judging by the results of many 80s recordings, it wasn’t enough!

I’d like to hear more about this mythical skinned cylinder.

Is that a high school photo? East coast? Staten Island maybe? I'm a California (almost) lifer
but probably 10 years older than you... I don't recall California ever reaching those heights but I was busy buying vinyl and creating snare sounds in marching bands. Marching band snares went from calf skin to plastic that was tightened up with wrenches to make an almost glass like surface and a very non-reverberant tone so the judges could hear if the ensemble played in unison.
