Ape Matrix
I’ve been really playing around in Ape Matrix recently for the first time in a long time. I remember kind of struggling when I first purchased it and I wasn’t as familiar/comfortable with how all these apps play together at that point (AUM was a real struggle for me too in the beginning!)
Coming back to Ape Matrix now with a bit more experience but also I believe they’ve streamlined it some - man, I really love it! Having access to the built in LFOs for modulation and also the built in on screen keyboard - really useful stuff for the times when I maybe only have 30 mins to burn and just want to play around some. I have the 3rd party LFOs to use with AUM along with a midi keyboard but for me, a lot of the time, I just want to experiment and throw some shit against the wall, see what I can manage to break. I had it in my head that Ape Matrix was much more in-depth and would be the last thing you’d want to use for this kind of adventure but revisiting it - it’s super efficient and easy to use actually.
Are there any specific drawbacks that come to mind where Ape Matrix isn’t as capable as AUM? I guess I’m just sort of surprised that it doesn’t seem like it’s nearly as prevalent in the community, curious if there is a good reason for that or if it’s just that we all kind of go with what we know?
Comments
apeMatrix is the bomb. I use apeMatrix to create networks of apps and to play around with new apps. Experimentation. Exploration. More than a few of these creations have ended up in released material.
I still use AUM for my home iPad studio connected to an audio interface, mic and pedalboard. I have a few sessions saved that create the vertical lanes of inputs and outputs the way I want. The advantages of AUM in this setup are: easy access to and metering of each I/O lane, and the ability to arm each lane for recording. apeMatrix has fewer recordable channels.
apeMatrix can only record, at most, a single summed stereo audio file from each of the 3 matrices, and they aren't sync'ed.
But apeMatrix has latency compensation for each plugin, and also has MIDI Clock sync, both in and out.
I use apeMatrix (or Audiobus 3) with hardware MIDI sequencers and audio recorders, and AUM standalone mostly due to it's sync'ed audio recordings, which are auto-saved in AudioShare so they can be easily transferred to external hard drives and SD Cards using Files App.
apeMatrix doesn't get the CPU spikes and audio glitches as often as AUM when opening and closing FabFilters or Sugar Bytes plugins.
Ahhhhh… I figured there must be at least a few pros and cons that I haven’t come up against yet. Recording individual channels can definitely be a big one sometimes!
I have noticed the same with Fab Filter plugins and now that I think about it, I had Aparillo going this am as well with no lag or glitches. Not sure if I’m crazy or its just the far superior internal keyboard but I could swear at times the audio quality seems better in AM vs AUM but I realize that’s far too broad of a statement. Just an observation I’m keeping an eye on to see what it is I could be noticing I guess.
Very interesting on the latency compensation as well.
I really just feel like a little kid all excited about the new playground I just found now that I am comfortable with the basics of controlling the audio flow and midi within Ape Matrix, having so much fun, figured I’d check in and see what else I might be missing!
I often think it is time to give apematrix a whirl again. Same thing as you, I bought both when I knew very little and somehow just gravitated more towards aum in the end and settled on it. But I see also that there are so many advantages to ape for the kind of playing around with lfos you are talking about, and which I love
You get at most 6 x 32bit channels
Something about the matrix interface. I learn something new every time I use it.
You gotta give it another go! Just watch a short vid on connecting audio/midi and then maybe one on modulation with the on-board tools (LFOs mainly but you also have aftertouch and the accelerometer as well). As long as you can find these controls, that’s really all you probably need, pretty self explanatory from there (hint: once you have some plugins loaded, open up the instrument or effect AUV window from the instrument or effect you want to mod, then click the little button that looks like squiggly handcuffs in the top left of the plugin window and you’re 90% there! I was trying to click the lfo icon in the main settings pop up which do anything except turn it on/off)
I love apeMatrix. It’s always been my favorite host and still is. I like seeing the schema of everything on one screen without having to scroll side to side. I didn’t instantly take to the matrix at first, but after a short while I found it’s efficacy of screen real estate superior.
Nothing against all the amazingly spectacular alternatives, but the apeMatrix interface makes more organizational sense to the way I think.
In case there are those who didn’t notice… iDensity has an abbreviated version of the apeMatrix matrix built into it where you can host AUv3s right inside iDensity.
You all know how I feel about apeMatrix already...
😉
Indeed! I watched some of your vids sir, super helpful!
Awesome - I'm glad to hear that they helped.
I'm also a big fan of apeMatrix but find I use AUM the most as it's a bit more user friendly and flexible in performance and recording.
apeMatrix mixer is less easy to use I find, but It's great fun to build things with.
I think Alesssandro plans to add another Matrix at some point.
