Probably Stupid Gear Question From a Rockist

I have a question that will probably get me excoriated on here, so please pardon the ignorance:

I'm looking for a poly synth that functions not only as a standalone hardware piece of gear, but also something that I can load samples into from my computer, and then disconnect from the computer and play live.

I'm looking to load keyboard patches in from three sources: native Ableton synths, Alchemy from Logic, and Reaktor. I have a pretty good handle on how to load and edit samples in both Ableton and Logic. What I don't know is whether a hardware synth exists that allows for these samples to inputted and then can be played independently of a computer, while also functioning as a halfway decent synth on its own. Am I better off buying a sampler and keyboard separately? If someone has a few options they can direct me to I would hugely appreciate it.

We only exfoliate, not excoriate, here.

  • I would use AudioLayer for this set of requirements. It can be fed samples and spread them
across the keyboard or accept MIDI input from a keyboard or pad controller. It has an auto-sampler capability to connect it to your computer and send it MIDI and record the
sounds into the proper slots to clone a synth easily. It's not cheap but it's great as an app that functions as a Digital Sampling Keyboard.

There are a couple other apps but AudioLayer is the most robust and complete. It also includes capabilities for filtering, adding extra FX and layering of sounds by velocity/volume.

OP is asking about hardware synths, not iOS apps.

  • Maybe one of the mega-workstations with a full-fledged sampler from Roland, Korg, Yamaha, Kurzweil? None of those can load Ableton, Logic, or Reaktor, so you'll have to multi-sample them, which would take a very long time. I haven't owned one of those since the EX5 and K2000S, so cannot be of any help with their modern offerings.

A Macbook Pro and a good keyboard? The new Arturia looks good.

Or an Akai MPC or Native Instruments Maschine+ and a good keyboard? The Akai's have an auto-sampler onboard, so it's easy to multi-sample your VSTs and hardware synths. I use an Akai, but have no experience with the Maschine+. Maschine MK3 is amazing but requires a PC. But those are like hardware DAWs or grooveboxes, but their samplers are good, but nothing approaching Kontakt.

There was a company called OpenLabs that put a desktop computer in a keyboard, with a touchscreen, plenty of knobs and faders, running Windows, and called it the Neko. But they were swallowed up by Roland and are making iPad apps now (ZenBeats).
