Heavy metal/Death metal demo made using only iPad

I appreciate that almost everyone here will have absolutely no interest in this kind of noisy music but I felt compelled to post this, mostly due to my sheer amazement of what a simple iPad is capable of making.

Below is a demo song for my Death metal band that has being made entirely on iPad. By that I mean there has been no additional instruments used whatsoever. For those interested here is my process:

Firstly, the track is written using jam maestro (I use jam maestro for pretty much every song I write and have written for the last two years. The app literally changed my life!) I use just 3 basic tracks: Bass, Drums and guitar. I write the riffs using the bass track because I am a bassist by trade and it’s the only instrument I truly understand. I then convert the bass to guitar and add chords when needed. Then I add basic drums and run it all through Audiobus putting track three (guitar) through Tonebridge to add distortion and get a feel for the song. Once happy I build up the drums and finalise the template. This is where the fun now begins!

For the guitar I use shreddage samples played through Auduolayer. I currently use GarageBand to control this, mostly because I find the velocities easy to use on the piano roll and I use the velocities in AudioLayer to control the picking directions in shreddage. I’m sure Atom2 can probably do this better than GarageBand but I am yet to get my head around the pattern triggering! Indeed it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks! Once guitar is programmed I take a clean mix down and load it into AUM where I re-add distortion from Tonebridge and mix the sound to my liking. Job done.

The bass midi Is exported to Gadget from jam maestro and run through Madrid. I use a custom sound and lower the velocities on the entire track to add realism and get rid of the clicking noises on the higher notes. I then feed it to AUM and mix through Mamoth to get a clean sound I like. Then I feed the clean sound through tonestack bass fuzz setting and I think it sounds fat as!

Drums midi is exported from jam maestro to drum perfect pro. (It took me a long while to create a midi map for DPP in jam maestro to enable the two to link correctly but got there eventually. Personally I hate DPP pattern editor!) I then add a bit of swing and humanisation and run it through their Harvey metal kit. I then export each stem individually as a wav file.

Finally, I mix it all in GarageBand again and add the horror sample which I take from YouTube using beat time.

With this track I have even ran it through the BandLab app to use their built in mastering effects. This is overkill though for a demo in my opinion.

This demo will now be passed to my bandmate who will replace the guitar with real guitar and add a solo and also vocals. I will record actual bass and we’ll discuss what to do with the drums (a metal band using midi drums?! Shock horror!) this is how our previous demo and are upcoming debut album will most likely be made.

I hope you have enjoyed this little insight into a non EDM use of iPad music. And please try to “enjoy” my demo song, Slugs.

  • It’s got all the basics there, but it definitely needs some work on the drums. Guitar, bass and vocals will improve it, but the drums are too quantized and flat right now.

  • Awesome track, mate! Really loved it. Like to listen to metal stuff done on iOS. The Garageband Users facebook group sometimes has some metal tracks, but here it seems rare.

And awesome workflow you have... This was a good listen AND a good read 😎🤘

Really interesting idea here. When I had a guitar, I could try and play simple riffs (powerchords only. that's what I can do ), but on iOS I struggle a bit with that. Gonna try it like you did. I'm a bassist by nature too

Thank you very much. Yes iPad metal is very unique here and most places really. I only got into as I can’t play guitar!

I don’t listen to metal daily (or weekly ;) ) but I think it sounds good. Hard to mix such a busy production I assume.
The intro is spooky, perhaps a bit long? The bird sounds made me smile because they’re famous from 808 State’s Pacific (originally from an Emulator sample disk).

    Thanks. Glad you liked.

I create a particular genre of metal called Goregrind. Most songs are from horror films and the film is often sampled at the start of the song. It is not uncommon for the samples to be longer than the actual songs. Weird I know. But it takes all sorts!

  • Not bad ! 😄
I like the sonograph profile of your track.
    Very… death metal.

  • Very White Zombie-ish. :)

  • More of a mainstream metal fan personally, but I totally appreciate what you have created here. Love the intro and while I'm not well versed in the genre, this sounds like authentic Goregrind to me. I don't think metal gets much play in the IOS world so keep it up! The more there is, the better!

  • Nicely done, and a fun listening. The drums, like michael_m points out are a bit off and that's a bit strange as you have the best iOS app there is for them (imo). Also, I think it's better to upload to SoundCloud so you can present the song directly here and skip the download part. Probably miss a few cause of that...

  • I thought this was absolutely brilliant. Great stuff.

  • Fuck yeah! 🤘☠️ Interesting workflow.

Yeah I’m not overly happy with the drums. Perhaps it’s the swing I used? I’m gonna have another look at some point. Won’t be the first to admit that DPP has a steep learning curve

  • awesome. i grew up on metal. reminds me of cannibal corpse or even cattle decapitation. VERY cool to see metal coming from iOS. thanks for sharing your process.
