I really liked the VCMG “ssss” record that came out a few years ago.

NanoStudio and Gadget are obvious contenders for the “how”. I might suggest you to go even more limited though. Nanoloop is really fun. ElasticDrums might be just enough as well.

    ssss is damn awesome.
Nanoloop and ElasticDrums are good options indeed. They have the best power+limitation ratio for minimal.
At the moment, Nano is the only music app I keep on my android phone because of storage space 😂

Pixitracker can be a good option too, limit yourself to 4-6 tracks max and you'll have to balance what goes where inside each pattern

  • Update after over three and a half years...

I was digging into seeing how people (especially Richie Hawtin) produce Minimal Techno, revisiting old videos and such. Then I googled "how to produce like Richie Hawtin", and this thread popped up in the Google search, and so did this thread!

    https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/35748/how-to-produce-minimal-techno-like-ritchie-hawtin-stephen-bozdin-etc/p1

Unreal! So I actually created two threads on the topic, both with Richie Hawtin as my main inspo for Minimal Techno?! 😂 Ha! So I've actually been obsessed with Plastikman a couple years longer than I originally thought. (I thought 2021 was my "Summer of Minimal Techno".)

Anyways, I'm glad to find these threads again. Not only for my own (re)edification and to remember what I've forgotten, but also just to read what was written years ago. In the other (original) thread, GR-16 was brought up a lot as far as a good environment in which to produce Minimal Techno.

Which is crazy to think that now we have GR-II, which is actually what resparked my rabid interest in Minimal Techno in the first place! GR-II in of itself lends itself flawlessly to any sort of Minimal genre.

So originally the genre influenced the apps I used, and now an app influenced the genre I want to produce. 😂 That's some "circle of life" shit right there.

Look at Plastikman albums for his more minimal output

    Yup 💯

this guy is hands down my favorite techno artist. deep, disgusting, minimal techno.

how about some Melodic minimal techno. why not have the best of both worlds! This album by Vril is one of my all time favorite albums of ANY genre.

This playlist has a ton of great techno... maybe more hard hitting...

The Hate channel on YT is my go to for finding new techno. its mostly pretty aggressive stuff, but theres a wide range of genres

as far as technique goes, the most important thing is that rolling bass, and a nice groove. Techno can be quite simple, but getting that groove locked in is super important. first things first lock in that groove and bassline, then add stuff on top. ambient stretched out reverbed pads, evolving modular sequences, a nice found sound sample to layer and accent the groove...Lots and lots of automation goes a long way. try to break out of the typical edm arrangement / structure and go with a constantly building and evolving track. I literally live for techno, and wish you the best on your journey.

    Thank you!

  • Just noticed this one, good inspiration. Do everything from a kick! Staying true to the word “minimal”.
