i just got patterning drum app for my iphone. does anyone have any advice on making drum fills to go between each pattern?

  • “Drum fills” is a very broad term. What do you have in mind?

  • i guess i mean transitions between patterns. like a quick 1/4 bar tom pattern or something between patterns in the song

You could either reduce the number of steps playing for a pattern (for instance 16 steps to 8 or 4), or you could reduce the bars being played at the timeline (by holding and dragging).
The drawback of changing the number of steps is that you have to go back to changing the step duration for each sound (kick, snare, etc). So I would suggest duplicating a pattern twice. Let’s say you have a pattern on A20, I would duplicate this same pattern on A21 and A23. Then change the step number for each sound on A21 (to 4 steps for example). One you are done you now have A23 on your original 16 bar setup (thus there is no need to change the step number yet once again).
I can send pictures if I am not being clear.

The book suggested above seems like a good idea.

    Ahem…

If you’re a heavy reader, you’re welcome for the site. The book has several fills for each genre. It’s a good starting point to at least give you ideas.

  • Siri, can you show me a book that really, really shouldn't exist in print?

😊 Seriously though, brilliant, thank you.

Sorry about that, I answered with the iPad version on my mind. I suppose the only option left for the iPhone then is change the number of steps

  • Wow
    Brought that book year’s ago
Might have a look through the book shelves

no worries, i’ll try that thanks again

    • Main beat on A1
    • Duplicate to A2
    • Change the last part of A2 to include the fill
    • Rinse and repeat

Changing the length of a pattern to create a fill is great feature but for most pop/rock/soul/dance/whatevs fills, you’re not looking to insert a fill but rather change a part of a pattern into a fill.
