Do not buy Audient EVO 8 interface for your iPad PRO music production, does not work.
Hello all,
I was kind of happy to "upgrade" my Audient EVO 4 interface to Audient EVO 8.
This looked promising: 4 inputs, 4 outputs, USB-C and external selectable gain, phantom and output buttons and knob. a great way to have two audio effects for my live dawless sessions.
But.... when I opened and started using the unit...
Just going into AUM Kymatica, Audiobus 3 or other iOS application to use multiple outputs, the interface does not work at all.... it does not route the extra 3&4 outputs to the physical outputs.
Although this unit was marketed and sold as iOS compatible (my Audient EVO 4, in fact, worked), the EVO 8 is not 100% fully class compliant and it looks like some software is needed to control the mixing output, a piece of software that in the case of iOS does not exist.
When I plug the unit, for example in my last 2020 iPad PRO, either Kynetica AUM and Audiobus 3 recognize the interface, I can configure the audio channels, select the inputs, outputs, even the audio level signals are working in any part of the audio busses, however, when pluging the 3&4 output cables to the mixer/amplifier, only audio of phisycal output 1&2 works. Audio from output 3&4 does not output anything (of course I tested the unit in Windows 10 + Ableton Live and all worked).
Using Audiobus 3 the symthtom is a bit different, audio from outputs 1&2 is mirrored to outputs 3&4 of the interface, making the use of it possible.
There are users out there that are using this unit and having even more problems with the autogain feature, and other stuff...
Pretty sad to have this interface and having to sell it new because of this poor testing.
So, any advice to have a decent and 100% iOS compatible interface with 2 inputs, 4 outputs and USB-C ? Even with MIDI...?
Thanks mates,
Alejandro

@alexrm1x for a similar price I can definitely recommend the Motu M4. Four inputs and outputs, all available in iOS, DIN MIDI in and out, USB-C (no power passthrough though).
That’s a bummer, I was wanting to upgrade from the evo 4 myself soon, I guess I’ll grab the motu instead
Just out of curiosity, what iPadOS version is being used?
Have you contacted Audient about this? If not, you should. Maybe there is a way to make it work correctly.
Focusrite scarlet 6i8 works flawlessly here but you need a computer first to configure the rooting as you want.
Official statement:
"EVO 8 is not officially supported on iOS"

Be advised, yes. I'll grab the MOTU M4 upon the sale.
iPad PRO 11"

I don‘t know what‘s contained in an EVO, but it‘s for shure different from the ID interfaces.
And I’d never buy anything with autogain anyway
When shopping around last year I remembered reading that the Evo 8 was not iOS compatible but the Evo 4 was. This info was available but kind of hidden, which is a bummer. It’s also confusing when you purchase interfaces from some retailers, because they will list MAC/PC only and sometimes not specify iOS but it ends up working just fine. For example, SSL2+ on sweetwater does not list iOS but obviously it works. Many other cases like that…
Highly recommend the Motu M4, especially at the price point. I’ve had it almost a year. It’s stable with great specs and a pristine slightly clinical sound.
Totally true 💯 I’ve had to call a few manufacturers and get iOS compatibility specifics since they don’t make it totally clear.
The M4 is an exceptional value! I Use it everyday. And I love it more each day I use it.
I listed my new EVO 8 unit for sale.
Also, went just today for a wallapop offer (classified ads in Spain) for an MOTU M4 for 180 Euro. Drove 20 miles and the stupid cunt listed an M4 and it was an M2. Idiot.
I checked thomann and local retailers and MOTU is out of stock until July/August!
Today it was a hard day...
Thanks a lot for letting us know that this doesn't work. I was also thinking of upgrading to an EVO8. Had no idea that this wouldn't work. Really a shame, the EVO4 is perfect for me.
Audient do need to make this more prominent! I have an Evo 4 and was already aware about the 8 from reading up, but I’m pretty sure it was not immediately obvious.
I have the M4 and an Audient ID4 MK2. Love them both. The M4 is rarely available from dealer stock so if you want one, place an order and it should arrive fairly soon. Mine took about two weeks.
The MOTU M4 will definitively take weeks to arrive to Europe...
What do you think of the Roland Rubix44 ?
Thanks mates.
I also know the evo8 only does 2 channels of phantom power when connected to usb-a. I don’t have usb-c on my mac so I decided not to get the Evo 8 when looking for a small interface.
Then I couldn’t find an evo 4 in stock anywhere, so I wound up finding an apogee mini me very inexpensively on Craigslist and did 2 vocal sessions in a singer’s apartment with it; I’m very pleased with the sound. I also discovered it works great with iOS through the CCK with a hub in between. That has nothing to do with your evo 8 question though.
I hear very good things about the new motu interfaces.
I bought the Roland Rubix44 last year and I'm pretty happy with it. It is big, but sturdy, metal material and great knows, limiter and compression options.
Of course 100% compatible with iOS, tested with AUM. Definetively the alternative for the MOTU M4.
