ChowKick AUv3 Public Beta
Hi AudioBus folks,
I've been working on a new little plugin lately. It's a simple kick drum synthesizer, based on some research that my friend Kurt did on modelling old drum machine circuits. The original idea was to figure out a way that I could change the resonant frequency of the drum independently from the "punch-y" attack part of the drum sound.
Anyway, I'm not sure how useful this type of plugin is for iOS (I've mostly just been using it on desktop so far), but I figured I'd make a TestFlight build in case anyone here wanted to try it! Happy to hear feedback and general opinions.

Crashes on launch iOS 15.0 Beta 1
Works fine here on 13.6.1
No crashes so far.
Thanks
Will give it a spin later
Looks nice
Awesome kick! Super thick, and love how weird it can get when introducing different pitches. Can't wait for the release version, gonna be using this a lot in Drambo.
Thanks for testing! I'll try running on iOS 15.0 later today to try debugging whatever's causing the crash.
Ran great on 14.6 earlier, there’s a lot of sonic space to explore in there...
Sounds good! Would love some “dedicated” modules for drumsounds.
Cool! Going to try this. Maybe a ChowDrumMachine in future. 😄
Works great here! Getting nice results adding some filters (AUM filters, Filterstation2) and sequencing with Rozeta Cells in AUM. Next see what happens in Drambo.
@chowdsp Any chance of the Matrix Delay coming to iOS? I’m loving it on desktop!
Do any beta testers already own Synthdrum Kick? I love all drum synths and drum machines so I'm sure I'll be buying Chowkick but I just wondered how it compares?
You can download it for free and find out…come on
Dope. Joined beta. off to test it out. Cheers!

I would definitely like to do it at some point! I think it's going to be a challenge to get the UI working on iOS, but I'll try to make some time this weekend to just try building it and see what happens!
I actually did 90% of the DSP work for this plugin about a year ago, but didn't release it because I was hoping to work it into a more fully-featured drum machine plugin. Since I haven't had the time to actually do that, I figured I would just finish up the kick drum in the meantime, and make that its own thing. Maybe someday I'll actually finish the full thing
. "ChowBeats" is a fun name too!
Thanks,
Jatin
Great! Love Matrix delay too! 😍
@chowdsp The Tight and Bounce controls seem quite similar. Can you tell us more about them?
So the resonant filters used in many of the older drum machine circuits have some interesting nonlinear characteristics, so the "Tight" and "Bounce" controls adjust the specifics of those characteristics. "Tight" essentially modulates the damping of the filter so that it is more damped during the attack part of envelope. "Bounce" modulates the frequency of the filter in a similar way. The details of how this is implemented are covered in this DAFx paper. Eventually, I'm hoping to add some different "modes" that will make the Tight and Bounce controls behave a little bit different in each mode.
Thanks,
Jatin
Sounds great! I’m missing being able to alter the attack. Also with the decay on 100%, I’d expect some ‘boom’.
I’m testing on iPhone so maybe not seeing all the controls?
I’m no drum synth expert either so I might be missing something.

Hi all,
I've been working on some updates for ChowKick that are close to being ready for release! If anyone wants to try out the new version of iOS, there's a TestFlight build available here. There are also test builds for the desktop version, available here.
Along with some bug fixes, there are some new parameters for controlling noise and portamento, as well as a new menu for using custom tunings and keyboard mappings.
Enjoy!
Cool, had a lot of fun with this lately.
FYI: It's free in the App Store with IAP's for Tipping the developer. A great way to insure
the developer gets some support without the need to manage a Patreon. I think apple makes the developer do more than just expose a tip jar. I'd like to see this feature in all apps
as a way to honor the great apps that survive for years and years without a lot of additional
revenue for the creator.
