Ruimaker and FM - sound small? [it doesn’t! SOLVED]
Maybe it's just my perception, but Ruismake and FM sound a little small when compared with Slate 808/909 or London/Recife in Gadget.
Any tricks to "pump up the sound"?
This inquiry might be too vague and subjective...

Any Compressor will help. Rough rider 3 is free.
I like to use Beatformer on most drums, but I always use it on those.
Also fiddle with the knobs in each app, I add drive, personality, gain, decay, bit crush, etc… those can go a long way also.
Cool. Will try fiddling (just been using presets for now)
For Slate and Recife, maybe they have baked in compression in the samples?
FAC Maxima works wonders
It's a limiter?
(edited for spelling)
OK, can definitely get Ruismaker to sound like Slate 808 preset by knob fiddling
Going to try with FM. But maybe I'm misunderstanding FM drum synthethis fundamentally. It won't really sound like analog drums in Ruismaker?
Just turn Ruismaker’s main volume up to 119.
You’re welcome 😉
Bleass compressor preset of Basic with Passive setting, is perfect umphff for drums.
FAC Transient gives the drums some punch and volume.
LOL!
Knob fiddling has yielded some good sounds
Just need to be willing to tweak a bit more.
Really any FAC app. Bandit probably the most useful here.
Not everything needs to be big :-)
I find FM can find a place in the mix quite easily, and really cut through.
One alternative might just be to Use the “big stuff” and complement it with FM and the other ruismakers layered to sprinkle a bit of bite.
I find my best mixes are when I use the least amount of FX and processing. I always seem to end up with flat mixes when I compress too many tracks trying to make them all big fighting for prominence. I don’t follow my own advice and try adding more and more processing to ‘fix the mix’ even though deep down the opposite usually works best for me. Less is usually more.
I need reminding of that frequently.
Just a thought. :-)
I love Ruismaker cos it sounds small!. It’s about the only “electronic” drum machine I really enjoy, precisely cos it doesn’t try to fill up everything. Hadn’t thought about but “small” is a rather good adjective.
I think you should just try another app, maybe the new FAC DrumKit.
Please remind me too! 😄
Yep! Buying Hammerhead now!!!
I’ve read it sounds like Ruismaker … which would be great for me, maybe not so much for you… Would you ,ind reporting back when you get it?. I’m gonna get it anyway but I’m fooling myself making it to be an “informed” purchase 😜
Can do. I saw it also has samples and can import samples, so it's Ruismaker + Patterning (maybe)? Or best of both worlds of sample and synthesis?
I'll be messing with it soon but not for a little while (have a busy week).
It has a wealth of samples built in, so it doesn’t really sound like Ruismaker at all (except for the few Ruismaker samples thrown in)
It looks like I’m joking, but it really does work.
Seriously. Just raise the main volume of Ruismaker or Ruismaker FM.
Try it.
I personally prefer around 117 to 119.
This.
As with many discussions of analog gear: big and small usually translates to how "hot" the signal is. A dry 808 sounds pretty wimpy until you start saturating the signal. So indeed, raising the volume until the built-in limiter starts saturating will give Ruismaker's sounds more body.
Obviously, it's also a matter of taste, but my reasoning is that you can always puff-up a clean drum sound, but you can never make a blown-up sound clean again
Thanks everyone! After learning from the advice here I’m able to make the sounds I was hearing in my head. Changing the thread title to not sound so negative.
👍
Cool!
Ruismaker FM’s default kick is one of my favourites. I always make it fatter/bigger with AD’s RoughRider 2but maybe I can just turn up the volume. Thanks for the advice
I gotta say that @brambos drum-specific distortions and filters are soooo sweet that I begin to wish there was a Bram Drum Effect Rack (BosFX?) I could feed other drum apps through.
There is just nothing like the FX in Noir and Hammerhead, as well as the PKF in Ruismaker FM.
