I’m proud of this volume consistency (I think)

I’m putting together my 30th album. So, I create an order and then assign them to tracks. Then I turn the sound off and press “play” to visually see how I have to balance the volumes. To my surprise. I saw this...

Gee, all the tracks were recorded at just about the same level 😳. I’ve never been that consistent in my production. I just use my ears when recording. Sometimes the master bus goes up or down.
Never got this close to everything being spot on. Now, if I can only get a handle on compression.

  • Wow
This is an amazing idea, Mike. Sometimes I overthink the question of mastering a whole pack.
    And congratulations
This is wizard level of consistency 💖

  • I think most artists underestimate how similar most of their recordings sound, in terms of tone and production. A lot of people come to me expecting I’m going to have to do all this work to balance their album and get it to sound ‘cohesive’. Most of the time that’s already there and I’m just correcting for mix decisions based on room acoustics or monitor shortcomings.

I’d go out on a limb and say this is especially true of more acoustic based musicians who tend to play through the same amp or mics a lot of the time.

  • @Tarekith, what you say makes sense, but it still took me a couple of years to get my ears to have a volume “groove” that feels intuitive. I also create tracks in several different genres. Maybe this consistency happened cause the album is primarily Nave patches.
