Writer Block. OP-1 Clone M4L device.

edited June 2021 in Other

Sorry this may be old news now, but for M4L Ableton users this is one neat device. The Radio module got me wondering if you could build something similar in Drambo or AUM with other AU,s using Beepstreet Radio unit or Eric Sigth Strom?

SK Oakenfull playing with the device today on Twitch.

  • Definitely possible in Drambo. A lot of this is covered in the Flexi sampler, specifically the loopers, slicers, offset modulation, start and end fades, reverse and pitched/speed modified playback, FX and so on.
Drambo is more powerful though because "The Writer's Block" in some parts only controls what's already available in Live 10/11 while in Drambo, you could have e.g. 20 independent loopers at the same time, all storing whatever you've recorded the last 20 times. You could also automate random slice or position selection in clips recorded from a live radio stream - like a stutter gadget that rolls the dice on many radio snippets. Done that in the past, it works but of course you won't get great results all the time so you'll want another Flexi to record the best ones.
Two Flexis can be connected in a way that one of them always records and by stopping, you'd have the last 30 seconds recorded already, others call this "time machine recording".

Building something like this is actually a good way of getting to know Drambo.
I'd make a list of my most wanted features and start simple.

@rs2000 Thanks for the detailed advice. Will dive in and see what I can achieve.

  • Good luck @Jumpercollins!
You might also want to use MIDI control. Some Flexi functions can only be automated over MIDI, but it doesn't make a difference if these MIDI messages come from an external MIDI controller/MIDI keyboard, a bluetooth ASCII keyboard custom-labelled for your own special fun OP-1 looping device or if you generate these messages inside Drambo.

How can we set up Bluetooth ASCII keyboards as MIDI controllers? What’s the easiest way?

You first connect the BT keyboard in iOS settings.
In Drambo, you hit the little MIDI Learn icon:

Then you tap on the knob or switch you want to control and hit the corresponding key on the keyboard.
The brown overlaid square should now show something like "Ka" for key "A".
Tap on it and a popover menu will allow you to adjust the Control Type (momentary and toggle make most sense with a keyboard) and Range lets you adjust the max and min values.
