Best Etsy audio devices found
Not a modular enthusiast, but wholly appreciative of the science.
I've been browsing etsy for some one of a kind synths, and stumbled across an amazing Apprehension Engine that has brainwormed it's way into my wallet.

That is an amazing instrument. What a great find.
That thing is great. Perhaps also take a look at Leaf Audio’s Microphonic Soundbox. Not on Etsy though, similar price range:
@Philandering_Bastard
Very nice!! Thanks for the find- I love apprehension engines- always wanted to build one.
Hell, even looked for Apprehension Engine sample CD's- I found dollar store halloween sound effects to suffice- but having an actual device would be incredible.
@richardyot
lol, I thought so too! Lot's of cool shit on etsy
That video in fact convinced me to get off my butt and build one of my own. I have the Koma Field Kit, another piece of gear very useful for that kind of noise, so the pre-amps are already in place.
Nice! How do you like the Field Kit? How's the build quality?
I absolutely adore it. Build quality is top notch, sliders and pot feel solid. The panel is compatible with Eurorack so that gives you an idea about size and fiddly factor (there’s a lot of functionality). I discovered after buying that the interface inputs are compatible with Arduino sensors so that gives you an added range of switches, moisture sensors and what have you.
I immediately bought the FX version as well. The expansion packs are almost mandatory imo.
not sure if this is allowed here, but ive got a field kit for sale if anyones interested, Its the field kit and the expansion pack. Its basically brand new, i opened it and used it a couple of times and moved on to other toys.
I'll let em go for 275+ shipping.

Just wish to say. If I dont get my money from reverb. Im going to post to every forum until I get bored. How does this affect the music industry? Well. I think it would be like restructuring music in general. Sort of like a composer.
Thank you for the info, @Philandering_Bastard 👍 Looks like a feature-packed tool indeed!
Got paid after all.
Always good to get paid 👍😎
This looks interesting.
I have digdugDIY’s OP-Z input thingy, and it’s beautifully made. Here’s his Etsy
https://www.etsy.com/shop/digdugDIY
Lots of weird and wonderful stuff there.
awesome! It would never have occured to me to look for instruments on etsy...
4 stereo in/1 stereo out mixer OR splitters with adapters
Line level and coin battery powered.
Digging around at Etsy led me to TouchDesigner components that are for sale… have you ever heard about it? I think it’s more like a modular video DSP but it seems to be usable for audio, too.
I have picked up a few nice pouches for my other hobby, hiking and backpacking, off of Etsy. It never occurred to me to look for music gear...
Not an Etsy find but poking around there, I found this:
https://zoo.powland.com/product/sorte-muld-engine
That’s a relief. I had some problems a while back trying to get this damn telecaster that there were only a few of. The original order dodged me for 2 months regarding the release date (I checked about a week back and the same listing STILL hadn’t arrived in stock from last October), another guy fessed up and admitted it to me it had problems after I grilled him the day before he shipped it, finally got one from a reputable dealer and it was busted, but luckily they were awesome people about it and were even able to finagle me a replacement.
Tldr you’ve just gotta be a hardass no bullshit asshole to get your refunds from them. Not saying you weren’t, just that it’s ridiculous how hard it is to get in touch with ‘reputable’ dealers.
Man, I was hoping this would be about some cool Etsy MIDI keyboards with a little panache or style. I absolutely hate the cheap look and feel of all the M-Audios, Arturias, and so on. Can’t be lookin like a dunce on stage
TouchDesigner is 2 whole rabbit holes.
Darn it, my GAS for an Azzam Bells (any of their devices) has been rekindled.
Latest thing I bought on Etsy was an Ellitone E[64] Synth and Sequencer System. He must have been discouraged because I have yet to post my rave review about it - was distracted by other things in life, I swear.
No love for the Ellitone multisynth!?
@sevenape : plenty of love here, I’ve got one Surprisingly flexible for such a diddy little thing, and bargain priced for what it is. Most of the other ‘music toys’ for that kind of money on Etsy are more or less one trick ponies and/or strictly and obviously chip tune things. Great if you want to sound like an 80s video game, but Chip tune tones don’t really cut it for me. This thing on the other hand gives me some of that modular ‘what if I hook this up to that?’ surprise value, and sounds pretty cool. It felt like a punt buying something this odd from the States, but it was worth it. Some of the other Elliotone toys look great too…
I'm very tempted to buy it! Also because yeah I think it would scratch my 'experimental' itch whilst still costing less than 100 euros which is a fair bit cheaper than a lyra 8! I saw a video where My Panda Shall Fly Stuck 2 extra knobs on it for even more twiddling. Would you recommend it as a first hardware synth for messing about with?
https://www.facebook.com/mypandashallfly/videos/643311412742676/
@sevenape : I’m not the best person to answer that question, as I don’t really play any instruments, just play with them. And I’m very specifically into making dark ambient soundscapes and generally ‘experimental’ dins, not pop choons, so things like integral keyboards, polyphony etc are irrelevant to me. Also: budget is an issue, and what you are trying to achieve. (Do you need poly, for example? Something with it’s own keyboard?)
I think if I wanted a ‘first hardware synth’ and my budget stretched to it, I’d make a Behringer Neutron, new or second hand, my first choice. Because, um, that’s what I actually did. You can control it via MIDI or cv, and, a couple of years down the way, I’m still having a whale of a time with it, and it is getting even more useful to me as I finally begin to understand a little about modular, and am beginning to patch it out into some of my new modular gear.
It is very tweakable on it’s own account, mind. The whole point of a piece of hardware over an app, to my mind, is that it should have lots of knobs and things you can mess with physically, which the Neutron definitely has. Here’s it doing a self-generating ‘Krell patch’ a single take, no overdubs, totally on it’s own, just with a little light reverb from the built in Lexicon fx on my Soundcraft Signature Plus 12 channel desk, and me tweaking some of it’s knobs ‘live’ as it does it’s thing. No external keyboard or sequencing involved. Gives you some idea of the range of noises it is capable of.
Another option if experimental tweakability is your focus is the excellent Korg Volca Modular, especially if you manage to get a good price on one, they can be had for very little, probably comparable to the Ellisound price wise and a lot more capable, but it is a bit of a black box in comparison to the Behringer, and very much it’s own thing sound wise, not as versatile.
I enjoy the Ellisound, but it is as an add on to other, more rounded and versatile things which I bought first.
I think if it were my first and only hardware, I would probably get frustrated quite quickly with it’s limitations. As is, my favourite use for it is to create loops which I can then further dice and slice as Wavs in AudioShare, AudioStretch etc, and then drop into an AUM session.
Beautiful stuff @Svetlovska. You have a real talent for these soundscapes, even when you're just "tweaking knobs"
You make really good drones! I think we are kind of the same page idealistically, I mostly use apps to create long meandering loops that I put in koala sampler or gauss and set running to phase in and out of eachother. I think my ideas for a synth was just simply to play with and maybe sample for tracks in the same way I use Auv synths. I’ve been looking at the korg and the ellitone and other more expensive things, but I’m not sure about taking the plunge into hardware, purely because I think I probably could just use iOS apps forever, but I wanted to have a go. I’ll take a look at that behringer, thanks very much!
Here’s my kind of stuff, I tried a bit of more traditional stuff too on my channel, but it’s the loops I really enjoy.
@monch1962 : hey, thanks for the comment and the listen I confess I was pleased/surprised with what came out, and so easily that day it almost felt like cheating!
@sevenape: yep, I can relate. I’ve done virtually everything I’m happy with on iPad alone, and I’ve done it - in bed, on the sofa, in the kitchen… anywhere. It’s made me the most productive and creative I have been in my life.
Despite this, I now have quite a lot of hardware too, and Ableton to run it all, yet, the above track excepted, I still haven’t used any of it in a finished piece. I have to go to the room where it is, sit down, switch everything on, maybe get distracted updating something on the Mac, and try and work there. Not always feeling that.
But the hardware scratches a very different itch, especially now that I’m edging into modular. The physical feedback of tweaking a knob just so, and changing the whole timbre, or randomness, or whatever of a thing; the surprise of thinking ‘I wonder what happens if I do this?’ - makes for a very different flow to app wrangling.
I’m working on a way to integrate both, using this very bargain priced gadget to capture the rack output on the fly:
https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/TC-Electronic-Wiretap-Riff-Recorder/1LF9
set recording constantly as I noodle, without the distraction of the DAW, so if anything good comes out of an hour or two of faffing about, I can snip the wav and use it. A work in progress…
Hey, I loved your work, btw. Great use of Shoom et al, not to mention some choice use of audio from that excellent, disturbing movie Jacob’s Ladder. One of my favourites. I’ve subscribed to your channel. Be interested to hear what you come up with next.
Thanks very much, that's very very kind of you, I appreciate it a lot and always nice to meet another Jacob's Ladder fan!
Thanks very much for that Wiretap link, my god, I was wondering about things like audio interfaces and stuff, this seems like a really nice way to do things!
Yeah I do a lot of stuff horizontally too! To be honest I can't imagine getting ableton and learning that, but I dunno a few choice pieces of hardware in a little room somewhere I can feel a bit like a mad scientist... That appeals to me, especially as I (like most people) spend hours in front of my computer a day for work.
Thanks you've given me lots to ponder!!! )
@Svetlovska @PeteSasqwax have put in a bid for a second hand Elliotone multi-synth and the wooden clone “exfriend”. Keeping my fingers crossed. Just my luck the day I decide to buy one they are discontinued. Apparently Elliot from Ellitone is focusing on and I quote “larger analogue instruments”. Hope he means synths and not like giant percussion things or something.
