IDAM Working (sort of) via Dock with M1 iPad Pro

Hey Gang

Got my 11" M1 iPad Pro last week and plugged it (USB-C to USB-C) into my Lenovo dock connected to my Macbook Air M1 to charge it. Just as a lark I thought I'd have a look to see if showed as an IDAM device (knowing this shouldn't work). Lo and behold it did! Only problem was the crackling that came along with it :(

I have been wishing for this option as it makes the whole setup so much more flexible. Anyone else had any luck with this and also any idea as to what the crackling may be. I'm fearing it's being introduced by the dock.

Thanks for any thoughts.

  • Excuse the bump but has anyone else tried this with their M1 iPad? Or maybe it's a USB-C thing?

IDAM relies on the iPad implementing a USB feature called OTG (On the Go). This allows it to be either a USB master (normal) or a USB slave (when it detects another master). Since this changes the iPad's USB port, it requires direct connection to the iPad, no dock or hub. But on the computer side, the iPad is just another USB device (slave), so there's no reason for IDAM not to work in your setup.

Thanks for the explanation @uncledave . Only thing is that my setup is using a hub which the iPad is connected to as a device? It's almost working apart from the crackles. I'm sure I tried this same thing with my10.5 2020 Lightning port ipad and it didn't even show on the Mac as an IDAM device. If I can lose the crackles this would be a dream setup as I use both ports on my Macbook (1 monitor, 1 dock) so having to unplug them for IDAM is a pain.

  • Ok I realise that no one is that interested in my IDAM meanderings, apart from the appreciated feedback from @uncledave, so excuse me if I'm talking to myself here. Some further information to share. The crackling happens even when I plug in directly to the Macbook which leads me to believe that IDAM is basically working via the Lenovo Dock. Sadly I have no idea as to why the crackling is occurring. Sample rates in Logic and the iPad synth of both 44khz. I've tried using different cables.

Is this an M1 specific issue? Is anyone else using IDAM on an M1 iPad? Is anyone else using IDAM at all?! :)

  • @Cambler Do you experience crackling when using the iPad alone? I've seen other reports of crackling related to latest processors and iPadOS 14.6. You might try searching this forum.

  • How did you test @Cambler?
I would start with a simple app and large enough audio buffer on the iOS side.

  • Hi @uncledave and @rs2000 . Really do appreciate the replies. I have only experienced crackling on the new Synthmaster 2 in standalone mode (not as AuV3) and that is an intermittent crackling versus the IDAM which is basically continuous. I agree it may well be M1 related. I have tried all buffer sizes and a few different synths and checked sample rate. I'm hoping that it is M1 related and will be fixed with an iPadOS update as that means I can use the dock for IDAM. Of course if it's not fixed it means that IDAM is basically not useable any which way I plug in!

Out of interest, do either of you use IDAM?

  • Seems not all DAWS do IDAM ... after weeks of frustration trying every possible set-up Studio One "doesn't support IDAM" they told me. No idea why ... just "doesn't". No mention anywhere ... just isn't a thing apparently.

I'd greatly appreciate any advice - even an explanation - from anyone with some insight into this brick wall.

Damn nuisance - this inter-operability between ios and M1s was the main reason I bought the mac... but the computer says no. ☹️ Logic pro?

@Cambler No, I do everything on the device and when I switch to desktop, it's then desktop only.
I find the idea of using IDAM as a means to use a touchscreen operated synth like a plugin really great, it's just that I haven't needed it so far.

I feel your pain. Not used Studio One on Mac so have no experience there, however I have used an 8th Gen iPad for IDAM with Logic on an M1 Macbook Air and it worked flawlessly. The M1 iPad is working in regards to connection but with crackles (as above).

Thanks @rs2000 . Yes, it's all about workflow. I do a bit of both, with some projects starting on iPad and others in Logic. IDAM is great for the latter when you want to use some of the wonderful and inexpensive iPad synths etc within the desktop environment.

  • FWIW - I've found this conversation exceedingly useful. I rely on IDAM to bring iPad synths into Endlesss Studio (Mac). Any disruption to that workflow would drive me mad - so thanks for sharing your findings @Cambler!

So glad to hear that @gothamoddisee! I'm so appreciative of everyone's feedback on this thread as IDAM is such a wonderful tool for those using iPad and Mac in their production setup. Really keen to see if any other M1 iPad users are experiencing IDAM issues or successes.

I'm listening too. Like @gothamoddisee, IDAM to Endlesss Studio is very useful for me (though I tend to favour Studiomux for more flexible midi routing), but I don't have an M1 iPad, so just monitoring the discussion for now.

  • Someone in the Synthmaster 2 thread mentioned that the 2020 iPad Pro had a similar audio bug on release (which I assume got sorted out). Hoping this is the same.

  • Anyone have the Caldigit TS4 and tried connecting any M1/4 iPad to it via one of its two USB-3 powered sockets? - nothing works with my current Caldigit TS3+ :(

Would happily sell my TS3+ and get a new TS4 if I can run IDAM between my iPad PRO and Mac via a hub.
