iPad 3rd gen —> monitor?

I have an iPad 3rd gen 12.9 and connected to my external monitor vis usb-c —> hdmi adaptor. It works but there are black bars either side of the screen on the monitor. Is there a way to scale it up so it’s full screen?

Ipad 2732 x 2048
Monitor 2560 x 1440 (2k)

Thanks

  • Only if the app you are using supports different resolution video out, but iOS natively doesn't yet.

  • Ah interesting, cos VS runs in full screen! Wonder is Luma Fusion does

  • Yes Lumafusion does support it, TouchViz, VLC and K machine are some others that also do :)

  • Is there a USB-C to HDMI + USB-C hub so I can send video to hdmi and the audio to usb-c for my iconnect

  • You can get an hdmi splitter to split the audio from the video and then feed it into your iconnect, but I don't think you can get the usb connection to the iconnect at the same time as the hdmi out, at least it's not possible on my ipad pro gen 2, but might it might be possible on your usb-c model, I've not got one to try.

The problem is that the iPad aspect ratio is 4x3, while the monitor is 16x9, so you could only make it fill the screen by stretching it horizontally. When you use apps that play video, they can send the video direct to the adapter, which then displays it full screen. That's why apps like LumaFusion and VLC can use the whole screen.

Also, when you want to separate the audio, you run into the infamous HDMI copy protection. It requires compliant devices to not allow separating the digital audio from the video stream. Apple hardware and software will surely comply, since Apple is a content distributor. So, even if you're just editing your own video, HDMI will prevent that separation.

  • Is there any kind of audio-out on your monitor that you could send to the iConnect? Might not work great, but for instance, if there's a headphone out, maybe that would do in a pinch.

  • So I managed to do it albeit not through the USB~C route using one of these

USB C Hub, Yeeliya 5 in 1 USB Type C Hub Adapter with 4K HDMI,3.5mm Audio/Mic,USB 3.0/2.0 Ports, PD Charging Power Delivery, Lightweight Portable Aluminum Hub for Macbook/Pro, Other Type C Laptops https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08B182Y5G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_XJQ8XYKC9VT0B6KANH2N?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I can charge the iPad via USB~C, output the video to monitor via HDMI and have the audio go into my monitors via the 3.5mm jack socket (which bypasses the Connect4c and goes direct into front two jacks on 18i20.

The requirement was to be able to run Luma Fusion on iPad and have the main video on big monitor whilst hearing audio on nearfield monitors. And charge iPad at same time. Success!
