Lightning extension to CCK works with iPhone but not iPad
I’m trying to use a lightning extension cable to connect my 2nd Gen 12.9” iPad to an official Apple CCK which is then connected to an iConnectAudio4+ audio interface via USB. This works great if I don’t use a lightning extension cable between the adapter and the iPad. If I add the extension cable, then only power is transferred to the iPad, no audio or data. If I connect the extension cable to my iPhone XS, then I get power, data, and audio as expected.
I’ve tried with two different powered Apple CCKs. I’ve tried with two different (cheap) brands of lightning extension cables. I’ve tried cleaning the iPad’s lightning port, which in theory shouldn’t be an issue since it works fine when connected directly to the CCK. I’ve tried connecting with and without powering the CCK. I’ve tried connecting cables together in every possible sequence. I’ve tried rebooting the iPad. No luck. There’s something different about my iPad compared to my iPhone.
My goal is to plug in a single cable to the iPad to deliver power, data, and audio, without an awkward dangling dongle. A few other solutions I can think of:
- Try yet another brand of lightning extension cable, such as CableJive which is super expensive, but highly recommended on this forum. https://cablejive.com/collections/extension-cables/products/cablejive-dockxtender-premium-with-fastcharge-indicator
- Try to buy a discontinued iConnectivity ICC2L Lightning to USB type B inline connection cable, which delivers power, data, and audio directly from the audio interface without requiring a CCK. None have appeared on eBay for several months.
Any other options folks can recommend or think to try?

How long are the Lightning extension cables you've tried? If they're longer than 2 or 3 feet, you might try a shorter one. I suspect your iPad Pro may not be able to drive the cable, so it cannot communicate with the adapter.
So are you using a powered usb hub? Apple camera connection kit with 2nd port for charging also? Is the extension cable apple brand?
One cable is 3 feet, the other is 6 feet. These are third party cables from Amazon. Apple doesn’t make Lightning extension cables. Both cables work with my iPhone. I also just tried with an iPad Mini (the very first retina one from long ago) and they both worked for audio and data.
I’m powering the CCK directly from an official Apple iPad charger via normal lightning cable.
Hey Orand - I know this is an old thread but I have an identical issue that you'd posted about way back when and was wondering if you'd solved it. I've tried a 6' Lightning extension cable but no luck. I don't know if it has something to do with needing an MFi chip at the iPad Pro port or not but short of going to a newer non-lightning iPad, I'm stuck. Thanks for any suggestions ...
@babymogul - is there any way you can use a powered hub instead of a lightning cable extender? There should be no reason for that not to work.
iPad > CCK > USB A to host port of hub.
6' USB cable into a guest port on the hub.
You might even be able to get away with even a non-powered hub.
Also, be sure that your iPad is getting plenty of power. The stock iPad chargers are sometimes just within tolerances whereby maybe not enough current is being pushed down that 3rd party extension cable.
