Conspiracy Theory Re: Chomplr

edited June 2021 in Other

I was reading another thread where someone was asking about features with CHOMPLR and I was about to chime in with "great app but you realize you can't import your own audio right?" Decided to check first and lo and behold, looks like this feature has been added. I'm sure I'm a little late to this news on these forums. Looks like it was added 5 days ago.

This is a feature users have been begging for since the app dropped but it appeared they were going to keep it closed to sell their IAP sample packs (which are excellent in my opinion but very genre specific). But on to my conspiracy theory that is probably completely unfounded but curious what others think

Does anyone else find the timing of this odd? We get FAC Drum App, Hammerhead (finally some awesome apps where we can load in our own samples) and along comes CHOMPLR (which hasn't been updated in really any meaningful way since it launched a year ago).

This has been a major missing piece in the iOS production puzzle for a while now (I think so anyway, I know others will point to Reslice and Segments as apps that have been around for a while that fill this void to some degree).

The thought process here is that with these major players in the space, have to imagine that could affect IAP purchases for a competitor, so now they unlock it. Not hating on them, if I'm not crazy and this is how it went down, it's probably good business, I guess.

Thinking too much. MSX audio are musicians, not really developers so updates and Dev time is very slow for them. Easy to look that up.

I had screenshots and communication with them about sample import in Chomplr before pandemic. Even before segment existed, long before HH.

    No conspiracy.

MSX doesn’t depend on iOS. They make sounds for the biggest names in music software (Native Instruments, Akai, etc) in addition to producing for some of the biggest artists in music.

Interesting, like I said - probably unfounded conspiracy theory.

Pretty sure that Segments and Chomplr dropped around the same time, you may have meant FAC. In any case, I don't doubt it's been development for a while or that they don't rely on iOS. I'm somewhat familiar with the company and have purchased a lot of their products (including the sample import feature this AM!)

I don't doubt they've had a lot of convos about sample import, it's the first thing everyone looked for when checking out the app and wondered why it wasn't there. To someone who doesn't understand app development (like me) it seems like it's a feature that was intentionally left out and would have been there from the start.

These "major players" are individual programmers, one-person companies. These apps generate very little revenue ..not enough to pay a living wage. So, many developers put in time sporadically...it makes sense for them to periodically add a feature as an IAP to see if they can get some payback for the time they invested. Adding new features may also be subject to available time.

I'm aware of the fact that Bram Bos and FAC are both one man wrecking crews. MSX is a slightly bigger operation from what I've seen but anyone who wants to argue whether or not Bram BOS and FAC are "major players" on iOS just wants to argue!

My point isn't that Bram and FAC aren't important -- but calling them "major players" gives a sense that they generate a lot of revenue.

I hear you. I guess I was trying to point to those two being able trendsetters and leaders in the space to some degree.

I’m sure it’s just my overly active imagination running amok. Honestly, I’m super stoked to have this feature and now that I’ve had a chance to check it out, there’s definitely a lot more that goes into it than I would have thought (with it all categorized by instrument type, etc).

    Cheers!

Same, which is why I'm so bummed about no in app sample edit save option.
