Good sources of learning info for modular synthesis?

Hi all,

I feel like I'm reasonably well across the basic building blocks for modular synthesis (VCOs, VCAs, VCFs, etc.) and what they do but struggling with the next step of joining them together to create sounds I can imagine. I can string stuff together fine in miRack and occasionally stumble on something that appeals to me, but it's definitely a fluke rather than something I can do on demand at this point.

Can anyone recommend some good resources for getting to that next level of understanding? Happy if it's books or videos, free or paid (assuming cost is reasonable) - I just need something to get me through the next few "aha" moments.

Our forum members have put a lot of work into creating quite a number of tutorial videos for our community and accessible for everyone. If you take the time to watch these and try stuff for yourself, I'd be surprised if you don't end up as a modular synth power user ;)

For a start, also make sure you check out https://patchstorage.com (especially the Drambo and miRack sections). Lots of great patches. They usually lack detailed explanation but they get you started by giving you a good impression of what's possible.

    Enjoy!

  • Omri Cohen's VCV tutorial channel is a good source of info for miRack

I think you also will need time. It is like learning an instrument. Lessons are great but the learning happens when you practice. Take simple patches and methodically mess with them. Dissecting Moog Model 15 patches will get you pretty far with any synth. With something like MiRack, people often get distracted by advanced modules before developing facility with the basics.

And you can learn a lot from these unexpected behaviors/patches that didn't work as you planned but turned out great. With enough cables, modular is always complicated and the brain won't be able to calculate every minuscule detail. But tracing back from the result might provide some new, useful ideas. 👍

Computer music magazine - possibly free from your local library if you have a card number and the Libby app. Recent issue covered beginning modular.

  • Yea search this forum and then YouTube.

Come on, Pops, out with it. You get a cut, right?

I'll post some when I'm in front of my pc but the one thing about all of them that has me tearing my hair out is that they do not get to a simple patch for many many pages. Some of them never do.

Here's 4 links that have been no use whatsoever to me. No, really. What helped you to learn this stuff? What was your tipping point? Your lightbulb moment?

  • This is the playlist for Electronisounds' tutorial series for MiRack, which might help with putting stuff together generally:
