Solved- Stereo to mono summing lead with resistors - anyone know of a UK source?

edited July 2021 in Other

Hi,

I’m looking to take the 6.35mm stereo headphone mix from my ES9 modular audio interface into the mono 6.35mm input of the Wiretap 8 hour riff recording pedal I picked up recently for cheap:

https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/TC-Electronic-Wiretap-Riff-Recorder/1LF9?origin=product-ads&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiqWHBhD2ARIsAPCDzalh8w8s5It-SAR_DWrTs73NBSV5yov79Y8c6zeUk_feuuwbpC67-40aAjEfEALw_wcB

as a way of having a continuously running recording of my modular noodlings when I want just to play without the DAW and everything else fired up.

I learnt during the course of what I thought would be the simple process of getting a stereo to mono lead that a) this ‘summing’ connection is not as simple as I thought and b) basically, nobody in the UK (that I could find, anyway) seems to make an off the shelf solution.

The issue as far as non-techy me understood it is that whilst it is apparently safe to split mono to stereo, summing stereo to mono, as I want to do, if the stereo signals aren’t protected by resistors, results in at best a crappy signal and at worst actual damage to your gear.

I did find one American company that makes cables which have the protective resistors built in:

https://www.castlineusa.com/index.php/instrument-cables/castline-gold-3-5mm-trs-to-1-4-ts-mogami-2549-stereo-to-mono-summing-cable-with-resistors

But the cost of shipping looks like it will be more than the cost of the cable. My rudimentary soldering skills could kludge something g together I suppose, but I’d much rather find I missed that perfect off the shelf UK supplier.

I do have other options (a pocket wav recorder I use for field recordings, setting up a different mix in the ES9 to work with the 3.5mm outs on it) but I like the idea of leaving the Wiretap as a one button push session recorder permanently in situ in my rig for those DAWless noodles.

I’m frankly just astonished that a cable like this isn’t already available everywhere for people running their phones and iPads into mono amps etc…

Any ideas?

@BiancaNeve : Good spot! That’s (almost) exactly what I was looking for, and a fair price too as I only need a short lead. The only issue is that it is a stereo mini jack but a) I’m emailing to see if they can do it with a 6.35mm stereo jack instead, and b) if they can’t an adaptor plug will sort it. Excellent! Thanks :)

update I’ve placed an order for a 100cm stereo mini summed to mono 6.35mm, total cost a very reasonable £14.50. These are available in various lengths and marketed for Korg Volcas etc. I have some, of those, so it can do double duty with a stereo mini to 6.35mm adaptor and for my Volcas.

I’ve also asked if they can make up a stereo 6.35mm to mono 6.35mm alternative as that would be the ideal option.
