Using a macropad keyboard as MIDI controller

Hello!

I really wanted an small midi controller that would connect directly to my iPad so I bought a QMK compatible macro pad on Aliexpress for $30 and it worked wonderfully!

Here is me testing it:

It was theoretically possible, but I didn't knew if I would be able to program it, and if it would work on iOS.

QMK is a software to develop custom firmwares to keyboard/mouses and other HID, it has MIDI support, but there is no much info around.

There are way bigger keyboards that you could program however you want, and you could are encoders and screen to them.

Here are some examples of a step sequencer programmed directly inside a keyboard:

  • Interesting. Did you build that keyboard with the encoders?

No, those are from other people. It can be done, but I don't now much about it for now.

  • QMK is very deep, and it can drive per-key LEDs and even screens. I don’t think it’s possible to save state locally or implement something like velocity sensitivity though.
