SideBand Remix by 4Pockets.com - Released

https://apps.apple.com/app/id1576509490

Description:

SideBand Remix is an AUv3 plugin for final mixing and mastering. It separates the phantom center from sideband (L/R) content which is what give a stereo track its width, and lets you remix it.

This is ideal for adjusting the level of centrally panned vocals without affecting everything else. SideBand Remix is great for post-production engineers who want to reposition, isolate, and even eliminate elements of their mix.

Audio can be additionally split into 3 channels, LOW, MID and HIGH frequency bands which are all processed separately and eventually re-combined after processing. This allows you to control the bass and treble portions of your mix separately from the mids where the vocals naturally sit. Being able to push content from the center of the mix opens up room for a vocal to sit comfortably. The punch knob can be used to boost low and high band content or presence, while the shelf filter are there to make sure they never get out of control. As if that wasn't enough you can enable the harmonic exciter to inject top end sparkle into the mix or enhance low end frequencies.

This is a versatile little tool that can be used on drums as well as vocals. Remove reverb from those snares and give your drum beat that punch it deserves.

  • I’m interested in hearing demos on this, but as it appears to be designed to work on a final mix, it’s not really a practical option for iOS GarageBand, since there is no Master audio track (a real pain point for the software, by the way, and an omission I hope a future version finally fixes).

And apropos of nothing, ever since the last iOS update (14.6) the MIDI Strummer (aka Strummer FX) app has become very problematic running as an AUv3 in iOS GarageBand. It constantly quits and then offers to reload in the track. Hope Paul sees this and looks into the matter.

  • 5 mins play and it’s definitely a handy tool to add to your master chain when mixing.

you can use this also on single tracks. you'd be surprised what you can do with mid/side in terms of mixing.

  • I’m asking in complete ignorance but can an eq like q3 or Toneboosters not do this? I’m curious about getting this to hear what it can do but might hold off if I can do this with one of those EQs and setting the band to mid or side

  • A tutorial from Paul:

SideBand Remix isn't an EQ, it splits your mix into 3 frequency bands (low, medium and high) and splits each bands L/R channels into center and side, allowing you to adjust the stereo balancing of that band. This allows for adjusting vocal levels, adjusting ambient sounds panning, moving content out of the center channel to make room for a vocal (which are always center panned) and crazy stuff life this. Add into the mix there is a Harmonic Enhancer which injects life into a mix. I guess the nearest comparison I could make is the Waves Center plugin.

  • I got this a month or two ago and finally got around to using it. This single-handedly fixed a mix that I was really struggling with. Very easy to use and excellent results.

  • Amazing app.
To be honest, I've had it for months without using it because there is not much video tutorial content. I simply couldn't grasp the basics to get started.
Reading manuals helps greatly but this app just needs hands on tweaking so I did for a while putting the app in my mastering chain right before the last limiter and got very nice results.
Many dimensions to explore, wow, it just makes everything possible and because so, ironically it takes me even longer to decide what sounds best.

  • Pleased to say that Sideband Remix works like charm as an AU in GarageBand on macOS. Nicely done, Paul!

  • Has anyone seen an update re: @4pockets_paul and his medical procedure outcome?
