[FGF] Free gear Friday! (Or being at the right place at the right time!)
Copied and Pasted from my YouTube channel:
~~I met the nicest guy today at Sam Ash music!
His name is Jeremy Carlton. He’s a youth pastor and founder of “Shepherd at Home - a non-profit organization with a goal of sharing practical tools for building stronger families”, based out of St. Augustine, Florida.
I just happened to be at Sam Ash music today, picking up a small item when I overheard this guy saying he had a truck full of used gear. This of course immediately peaked my interest, and I had to go butt-in and see what all he had. I told him that I may be able to offer a little more than Sam Ash would on a couple things. Most of the items were “beginner” off- brand guitars and such, and as it turns out, Jeremy was wanting to basically “upgrade” this gear by purchasing newer, nicer gear for his youth group!
He said he has over 100 kids in his youth group! I think it’s just amazing that this guy is out shopping for, and making sure these kids have better instruments and gear for their music program! I offered to purchase one of the bass guitars he had brought in, hopefully for a little more than what they were willing to give.
There were several other items that the store wouldn’t accept, which he basically gifted me! I wish I would have had more cash on me at the time! After talking to him, I realized this guy has a heart the size of Texas, and that he really cares about the kids in his youth group!
So now, as promised, this little improv piece of music features the “new to me” Silvertone Bass guitar, courtesy of Jeremy Carlton! This piece also features an improvised guitar track composed tonight, just for this piece, and a single drum track (Lumbeat Rock Drums). Audio effects: SoundSAW on the guitar, and Lunar Lander on the bass.
I must point out that I’ve never really played much bass, and this will be my first published piece EVER where I’m playing a real bass guitar. (Most of the baselines in my music are synth/modeled.) So I’m relying on my guitar knowledge to get me through! (It’s really just a big 4 string guitar right?)
I also promised that I’d help spread the word, so please visit his YouTube channel here:

And his website:
Lots of great info for families! If you’re in the St. Augustine, Florida area, and know any families with troubled parents, kids, or teenagers, please send them Jeremy’s way!~~

I lived in and loved St. Augustine. Great story and nice track. 👍🙏
Great story, Ed! And the music is very cool too.
Thank you Mike!
After jamming out for a few hours last night with my new bass, my finger tips feel like they’re on fire this morning!
You’ve got to have really strong fingers and hands to handle and play a bass guitar properly. Evidently, I’ve gotten used to the delicate touch of my Les Paul Custom and other electric guitars.
I have another bass that I’ve had for a few months, (that I also stumbled upon - at a thrift store!) but it’s a FRETLESS bass and for some reason doesn’t have a very good output (if that makes sense) where the sound coming from it is very thin and weak. Maybe it’s the pickup? Not sure. I know the strings are different; they’re like plastic strings as opposed to the metal wound type strings you’d expect.
Anyway, I think this Silvertone Bass plays and sounds great! I’ll be using it in a bunch of projects in the future. I know it’s a “beginner” brand like “First Act” or similar, but I don’t mind at all here. If it looks the part, and plays and sounds the part, then it’s plenty good enough for me!
And I can see how playing this bass guitar more, will only improve my guitar playing. (I think!) This is going to be a great way to build up strength in my fretting hand.
Here’s a couple picks of the new gear:
The New to me Silvertone bass on the right, and my Stagg Fretless bass on the left.
Also pictured is the AXL B-60 bass amp. Haven’t tried it or even tried turning it on yet. Looks like another beginner type piece, but hey, it was basically given to me!
I need to buy more guitar stands!
Thank you! 🙏☺️
I think the piece turned out pretty good considering it took only a few minutes to put together lol. I spent more time fiddling with VS than I did anything else!
The chords I used here go back and forth between a major and a minor pentatonic scale. This is a concept I’ve been “experimenting” with lately, and it’s really opened up some doors for me that have previously been locked shut for the longest time.
Always got a lot of love for anyone helping out their community. Good job!
+1
