New Track: "When I Saw You"
No video, sorry. Just the slightly terrible soundcloud player...
Soundcloud is so cool. I have 9 likes already. Only 1 play, but people can tell how great this is without even listening! According to the people that 'love' this track I just need to visit some websites and pay some money and I can get lots more listens. Yay! From bots presumably. Which would be nice. I'd like to think that AI bots listen to my tunes whilst they try and break into people's Wordpress sites. Actually, no, scratch that.
Ignore me. I need espresso. ☕️

The “likes”are hits, too, I believe, so add them together. Marketing guys... that’s another story. At least you’re not getting prostitutes😉😎
I'm not bothered about likes or plays, I was just joking about how the scammers get their bots working overtime to "like" without actually listening. I have 5 or 6 likes within seconds of uploading, all of them wanted me to buy "Real" followers :-)
If you have to pay them to follow you, does that actually make them real?
I just can't imagine why anybody would pay to have people pretend to like their songs.
I didn't know that was an option 🤣
Cool jam!
Yeah, we were getting solicited there for a while. I was kinda disappointed when I realized these “hot singles” really weren’t all into my track lol
What confuses me is that people must be paying for likes or there wouldn’t still be so much spamming.
I can’t understand the whole social-media-fake-follower-all-about-the-numbers thing. It just makes it all meaningless.
But perhaps that’s just me being sad that nobody real likes my song 🤣
@klownshed Very cool track. I would be interested to know which artists influenced it, and also, I wondered if you have the lyrics for it anywhere. Reminds me of a track I once heard by @Jamie_Mallender featuring a Chomplr sample, because it reminds me of 90s PS1 games. I'm tempted to do a "lo-fi PS1 menu theme rough remaster" in the form of an AUM signal chain. Then I can re-use it for other video game vaporwave projects.
I like it!
I try not to let it bother me if I don’t get any feedback when I upload something. For example, the last 3 pieces I uploaded to my YouTube channel have a combined total of ZERO thumbs ups lol …but to me, it’s not about that. It was about the amazing fun I had in creating something, the journey, if you will, rather than the destination.
Edit: as soon as I remember or reset my SoundCloud p/w, I’ll get on there and follow you.
I don’t think any artist(s) influenced this track specifically. It just came out like that. I didn’t set out to make it sound like anybody in particular but I’m sure people will hear my influences in it.
In terms of artists that have influenced me and my music, too many to mention. But I would say Depeche Mode, early 80s British synth pop such as Yazoo and Gary Numan, NiN, massive attack, Unkle, mid 90s stuff like prodigy and many many more have been very influential.
Dead simple. I had them for a song for my old band that never got recorded from about 20 years ago so I repurposed them:
“When I saw you dancing, When I saw you smiling, when I saw you crying, when I saw you laughing”
“When I saw you dancing — who were you dancing with?”
“When I saw you smiling — you were you smiling at?”
“When I saw you crying — who made you cry like that”
“When I saw you laughing..:”
There is another section to the song which was originally the chorus which isn’t in this version. Hence “short mix”. I might add it one day.
There’s no chomplr samples on it :-)
In fact there aren’t any samples at all other than single hits. Everything is either programmed or played in live then quantised.
Drums are from Logic Pro, with various degrees of distortion.
Vocoder is from a Roland JD-Xi. I wish the JDXi had class compliant audio drivers. It would be an awesome all in one keyboard for iPad use if it did. As it is it’s midi only with iPad. I recorded directly into Logic with it and it’s nice being able to record live vocoder. When I use vocoders on iOS I tend to record into voice recorder app on my iPhone whilst playing back the song separately with headphones from iPad or Mac then import the files to run through a vocoder. I much prefer being able to vocode live.
Thanks for listening. :-)
Why thank you :-)
Don’t get me wrong, I have never been bothered by and definitely never sought “likes” or attention. This is the only place I’ve even shared this tune. I’ve not even played it to my wife! (true!)
This won’t be posted to facegram, instatok or Tikbook. :-)
My comments above are more kind of dry humour than fishing for compliments.
I don’t expect to get any listens. I’m not disappointed if nobody hears it as I’m a dreadful marketer of my own stuff. It’s obviously nice to receive compliments, but that’s just a bonus.
The reason for sharing with me is it kind of underlines a track as finished.
And to be honest it would be entirely hypocritical of me to go looking for likes when I’m not very good at dishing them out either. 🤣😂
The other reason for posting here is I’m slightly more likely to get constructive criticism of the technical aspects of the mix — mixing at home on headphones without my old monitors isn’t easy so the mix probably sounds bad on many people’s setups. Knowing where it’s crap is good to know. Plus I don’t know which frequencies I can’t hear properly anymore due to being old and grumpy.
I really like this. It does make me think a little bit of Depeche Mode but with a slightly different flavor. As far as commenting and compliments, I try to be enthusiastic with my praise when I hear something that fits into my admittedly narrow musical taste. I frequently wonder if people think it's disingenuous. I guess I really shouldn't worry about it.
So to sum up, good stuff.Love the vocoder. Like the beat and I also like your sound design.
The intro Bass is a delicious, and the chimey melody is great. Vocals work well too, it’s a fun track with a vibe that is mixed between edgy and cheeky.
lol I don’t use or post to any of those either. I’ve been Facebook free for a couple years now, though I still have my account, I never log into it.
I’ll admit I do browse around on Twitter every now and then.
That’s one of the main reasons I started uploading stuff too! I figure if anything ever happens to me, or all of my recordings, they will still be safe and sound out there on the internet.
Guilty as charged!
I mean, who am I to worry about other talented musicians “liking” my stuff, when they’re probably busy working on their own amazing stuff!
Exactly! Constructive criticism is the best kind!
It captures the era that inspired you perfectly…. Gary Numan and the synth/vocal bands.
@MadeofWax, @richardyot, @Edward_Alexander, @McD
Thanks :-)
I should go listen to other forum member's stuff... As soon as I've finished the VAT which should have been done last week 😱
