Dreaming in the Dappled Light - iOS only album

This is my fourth iOS album in as many years. A journey where I have slowly been learning to write better, to sing better, and to mix better.

Please take a moment to listen, especially if you like indie and shoegaze, or dark, sad music with haunting melodies.

I write a lot of songs over the course of each year, but only pick the best ones for release. So hopefully you will find this album to be focused and coherent, and worth a listen.

The songs either start life as noodles on the guitar (The Paper King, Let Go Of Your Fear), jamming on a piano (Stop Time and Run Away), or sketches in any number of music apps. Many of them were arranged and composed in GarageBand (When The Lights Are Low, All That I Want From You) or Gadget (Twilight Lives, Sinking Slowly) or NS2 (We Can't Face It Honestly).

Finally, all of the guitar tracking, vocal tracking, mixing, and mastering is done in Auria where I like to finish all the songs that are usually started elsewhere.

This album is out now on Bandcamp and queued for release on streaming services, I'll update the thread once those are live.

    Thanks! 🙏

  • Finally!

You posted #3 in a thread once, the refrain has been living in my head rent-free ever since, so I tried to find the song again but wasn't able to. Here we go! :)

Congrats on the album. #3 is still my favourite.

Nothing more annoying than having a tune stuck in your head, I offer my most sincere apologies. 😮

Richard, you shouldn't apologize ! To me, your best song is still "On Fire". The atmosphere, the lyrics, and the melody are just right. Listening to your new album as I am writing those lines. I will send you my impressions in a PM as soon as I finish listening !

I know, I’m actually delighted to hear that I’m living rent-free in @ervin ’s head 😆 There is no greater compliment you can pay a songwriter, and I truly appreciate it.

Thanks for the listen, I look forward to hearing your comments.

So far, "let go of your fear" and "stop time and runaway" are my favourites !

And I am in love with the guitar sound on "the paper king ". Reminds me of PJ Harvey guitar sound on "let England shake". Big fan of her and John Parish !

  • And the award for the most catchy song of the album goes to ...

    ... " we can't face it honestly ". Hands down !

  • @JanKun thanks so much for the feedback! 😊

  • listening now! Good stuff here. Has a 90s britpop, shoegaze-y feel to much of it I'm hearing - which isn't such a bad thing!

  • Catchy songs, I like your guitar tone as well!

  • Richard, your approach and philosophy continues to yield great results. Excellent production, too.

    I reaaaally like Sinking Slowly!

    Congrats on the album release!

Thanks, and you also managed to prove you made it to the end by mentioning the last song. Much appreciated, I never take anyone's attention for granted.

  • Just wait till you’re 73, Richard. It won’t be a problem!

We all become better with age. 🍷

  • @richardyot, that’s an interesting point. I tend to think we get moreso. The good get better and the bad.... worser. Anyway, congratulations on a cool album.👍👍🙏

Yes, interesting thought. I know some people who mellowed with age and improved (my father, my mother-in-law), and others who just became much worse versions of themselves, embittered and unhappy.

When it comes to art, it seems that artists are divided between the young prodigies (Picasso, Mozart) and the late bloomers (Cezanne, Alfred Hitchcock). There's an old article by Malcolm Gladwell on this topic that you might find interesting:

A great article about creativity, Richard. Reading it would be informative to many here.

I guess I’m a late bloomer if the blooming is measured by output. I’ve done more in the past three years than in the prior fifty. Frankly, it was not the desire to create that propelled me. It was discovery of the tools and the platform that lit the fire. Without iOS I can imagine I would have done absolutely nothing these past years. Also, I believe, without the forum even my use of the tools would have withered. The array of personalities here was particularly fertile soil to plant my experimental seedlings. I imagine you feel the same with SOMC being the centerpiece.

While in many respects it’s harder to be an artist today... no young artist can live in Manhattan in 2021... for example, in many ways it’s easier. Publishing on the internet might be the biggest advantage to today’s aspiring artist. The financial feasibility of iOS, in particular, made it possible for me. Writers can self publish, as you know. These are miracles where I came from.

The way I see it, being an artist simply means being someone who consistently makes art. That's within everyone's reach. Finding an audience is a marketing problem, not an artistic one, so you can't really judge any artist purely on popularity.

Did Sabato Rodia find fame and fortune? Nope. Are the Watts Towers a work of art? Of course. He was driven by an internal creative urge. That's what it's all about. That's it. The rest is luck and the whims of culture.

  • Great album! You pick sounds that work well together.

    Enjoying it...

There's also the time factor. From Van Gogh being able to sell about 2 of his paintings in his lifetime (despite his brother being an art dealer) to this flawless quote from 19th-century English art critic John Hunt: "Rembrandt is not to be compared in the painting of character with our extraordinarily gifted English artist, Mr. Rippingille."

    🤷

Good one, I'm an art history nerd and Rippingle is a new one to me! I love these kinds of stories, like the group of French artists who had a debate at the end of the 19th century and decided that without a doubt it would be Bouguereau and Meissonier who would be remembered in the future, when of course they are mostly forgotten now in favour of the (then despised) post-impressionists.

That's a nice one, too. And there's of course Bach, regarded as "a decent organist" (but not as a composer of note) by his contemporaries. The struggle is real! :)

  • A very nice album. There is your style all along with enough variety in atmospheres to keep pleasure. Well done!

  • Woow. Thanks for the streaming. Very cool album🤟

  • Top to bottom, side to side sadness. Excellent. ‘When The Lights Are Low’ is pure pop and I LOVE it. The chorus is authentic, the solo is gorgeous…like I’d been baptised in honey. You always write a song Teenage Fanclub wish they’d penned and on this album it’s ‘We Can’t Face It’. My proposal is for you to shake a tambo throughout the chorus. I think it’s begging for it. So, I understand you’re desperate for a B+ (Ah, remember those days?), but sorry to disappoint you Richard, you’re getting an A. :)
