Song Of The Month Club - August 2021

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine

    My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    You see me as I stand
    You take me as I am
    I’m rough around the edges
    I’m not a perfect man

    You clap your hands in time with me
    You tell me what I ought to be
    You’re not in love with what you see
    You tell me wistfully

    The fire in our hearts is out
    We try but are filled with doubt
    If I want to start anew
    I need to reach out to you

    Let’s run before we’re caught
    By all our troubled thoughts
    All we tried to be
    All our history

    You take me by the hand
    You tell me where you stand
    You know that life’s not perfect
    There is no master plan

    You dance your steps in time with me
    You show me all that life can be
    We make the best of what we see
    We look up hopefully

    The fire in our hearts is out
    We try but are filled with doubt
    If I want to start anew
    I need to reach out to you

    I’m back to using the Launchpad app for the music -- this time with Launchpad’s Bokeh Soundpack.

    I ran the recording through the Lurssen Mastering Console app to clarify and warm-up the mix. With the Lurssen app, I used a modified version of the “Classical (Warmer)” preset.

    This one is titled Ophelia's Lament.

    I like the way your intro takes its time to build up with interesting and intricate combinations of sounds, which ,btw, I haven't heard that much in your music up until now. So it's is nice to see experiment with new stuff. By today's standard after 1 minute, you would have already heard the first verse and first chorus ! Some kind of nice punkish middle finger attitude 😉

    I like your voice on the chorus a lot. Very smooth. The main voice and the backing vocals blend very well with the reverb. Is it a subtle tape saturation I am hearing ?

    One thing I would have done on the second verse, is to add a slightly distorted guitar with a lot of reverb and distant in the mix. Playing one slow strum on each chord change and let them ring with a slow vibrato played with a whammy bar.

    Nice track!

    Strong song as always. I like the synths in the intro and they way they move into the first verse. Nice vocal fx for the chorus, would almost be shoe gazy if the vocals were more buried in the mix.

    Drums a little subtle for my taste, and I’ve liked the bd and snare to be a little more up front for the chorus and middle 8. Louder drums in the chorus or quieter vocals in the verse/bridge would perhaps give the chorus more emphasis? Minor point down to taste more than anything though. Overall sounds really good, with a bright clear mix.

    But quiet in here this month. I posted this on the forum earlier this mobth. Hope it’s ok to post here too? Just a simple beat with a bit of vocoder.

    Thanks for the listen. Yes there is some subtle tape saturation, Reelbus on the master bus (using the mastering UI in Reelbus). DDMF MagicDeathEye Stereo is also adding a tiny bit of compression on the master, and adding a small amount of flavour too.

    Nice idea with the guitar - I might ask you to do that one day - my Les Paul doesn't have a whammy bar.

    I already commented on this one in the original thread, but yes this bass line is terrific, both in terms of the riff and also the lovely warm grungy sound. The chimes and synths all sound great and the vibe is nicely edgy and catchy.

  • Liking all this months entries. Here is mine, just messing around with Koala. Found a nice sample from Jiro Inagaki which I sped up and layered some Alicia Keys throughout.

    Very beautiful, sorta wholesome, reminiscent of all the bands I used to listen as a teen. Your vocals are starting to sound a lot like Malkmus. Bravo!

  • @richardyot sounds good Richard , I like the back up vocals… it’s a trip to come back and hear the progress in your sound.. the piano has a very familiar sound to me very much like a punch out theme from Nintendo. Good selection on your reverve

    Very nice riff that drives the song, and this mix is much cleaner and clearer than some of your older ones.

    There’s still your trademark looseness and wandering bass which both add a ton of character to the sound.

    The vocal is great, well sung and smooth. Good song especially that guitar riff.

  • I used Hammerhead, Gauss, Eventide Blackhole, Bark Filter, AUM and 4 samples to make this.

  • Recorded this with my sister. She wrote the lyrics and is singing and playing the guitar. I'm singing background vocals and improvised all the KORG synth sounds to it. I'm scraping a frame drum with my hand to sound like a soft shaker to give it a little rhythm. I think this is a nice little song. We may re-record it.

    Not sure what style this song would be classified as. Fresh folk?

    The vocal adds some nice textures to this nice chilled track, and the way it's chopped up is interesting. My ears did yearn for a little more in the way of melody though, the fragments are mostly quite short and textural rather than melodic.

    The intro is mesmerising: I love the vocal textures and the menacing drums. The lead sound (is it sampled bagpipes?) is a startling contrast with an interesting melody. There's lots of great textures and sounds in this one.

    Nice bassline and a geat groove, the samples are cool and the track has a really great danceable vibe. It is a bit repetitive for me though, I would have liked some more variation in the arrangement. Definitely a solid foundation though.

    The pads are really beautiful, and it's worth waiting for the end where the rhythmic parts drop out and reveal them in all their majesty. The fluttery rhythm is interesting and adds an edgy texture but I would have used it more sparsely. Some nice sounds in this, I like the static white noise that builds up towards the end.

    Great stuff. This is a very polished track, well-written and well-performed. Your sister has a great voice and a good ear for melody, and the two of you have a created a very good song.

    The guitar is well recorded with a lovely sparkle, the synths sound great and are subtly used in support of the song. The overall arrangement is very solid and everything serves the song, and that's a good thing because the song itself is great, with a memorable vocal melody. Well done.

  • Hi Guys.. This is a track i did with a German Artist.. Phie Claire.. we are doing more projects together.. Its has been released on Promo & hit the Traxsource Soulful Essential's top 100 charts.. Enjoy!..

  • @richardyot excellent. On the road for the 2022's album? The instrumentations and melodies are top. An ending vocal seemed to me out of tune but as you repeat it I guess it is not. Anyway, it is richardyot at his best. How do you do to be so regular in the quality of your production?
    (PS: yes it is bagpipes)

    @DavidEnglish A very cool chill out track with good atmosphere's changes to keep interest. Very relaxing.

    @klownshed Coming after David's music, I fell out of my hammock. Ouch! Very exciting tune with something coming from Kraftwerk. In which language ate the spoken voices? The ending made me fell out my hammock again!

    @flickremix Fresh air again for the hammock. Well done. Maybe a little bit too long or too repetitive.

    @trackedout I love your sound and atmosphere and unfortunatley I don't understand the lyrics. The ending is top as klownshed's one: it's over, period! :-)

    @rottencat Love the sounds and etheral atmosphere. Should have been shorter maybe.

    @Dav Beautiful. I vote too for fresh folk. It is absolutely charming and your sister sings very well imho. Bravo.

    @studs1966 It is not my cup of tea but it is perfectly realised. Very long but maybe this timing is good to get in trance on the dancefloor? Perfect sounding and production!

  • @richardyot
    First-class quality song and production, as usual. I especially like the background instrumentation on this one.

    @klownshed
    Catchy beat with an excellent bass line. The vocoder sits really well on top of the instruments. Very cool changeup about two-thirds into the song. It all mixes nicely.

    @Kitusai
    Atmospheric opening with a strong beat. I especially like the Middle Eastern flavor that starts at the 42 second mark. That sends the song into an unexpected direction.

    @flickremix
    Quite enjoyable tune both in mood and construction. This would be a great song to be moving to while roller skating. The visuals help to establish the tone and direction for the music.

    @trackedout
    Especially like the over-amped bass. Along with the guitar and drums, it creates a powerful drive for the song.

    @rottencat
    Wonderfully atmospheric. Both airy and dark at the same time. Feels like the minutes just before and after the rain starts, when the air is unusually fresh, the dark clouds are still intermittent, and the light has become iridescent. The voice comes through as both ghostly and casual. And the visuals add yet another layer of mysteriousness. The overall feel is more contemplative than scary. The concept of oblivion doesn’t seem that frightening somehow.

    @Dav
    Your sister has a lovely voice, and the background vocals blend in smoothly. (The Everly Brothers showed that siblings have a real advantage with voice blending.) The chosen instruments suit the overall tone just right. I especially like the Shakuhachi-like flute sound that subtly weaves in and out. It all fits together quite well.

    @studs1966
    A professional-quality production. The lead voice is strong and clear. Terrific club music for dancing.

  • I really enjoyed listening to everyones song. And thanks everyone for you comments on mine and my sisters song.

    @richardyot: Really good production. I like how it starts, a nice build up intro getting you ready for the main event, which doesn't dissappoint. I like the epiano choice, and the icicle drop sounds on top. Well written lyrics. Not the style of music I would normally choose to listen to, but found myself listening to it several times. Has a haunting style that I find appealing. Drum kit choice matches the song very well. And ending with a cymbal crash fading out was a perfect idea for it.

    @DavidEnglish: This has a lot in it that holds my attention. The EQ sounds really good on my sound setup. I would swear this is a pro job. It's busy but simple at the same time, and in a wonderful way. Even though it's nearly 5min, it ended too soon for me! I also yearned for a little more vocal melody like others expressed. Well done.

    @klownshed: Definitely not a boring song. Well mixed - the vocoder voices sits just right in the mix. I like the drive this has. Your choice of sounds works well too. Nice break 2/3 of the way through. Made me start looking at vocoders...

    @Kitusai : Quite mesmerizing. I would develop this into an even greater work. It has an interesting style/mood. The bagpipe (or is it an organ?) is a cool contrast to the rest.

    @flickremix: I found this quite enjoyable. Had my foot tapping from the beginning. The layers in this are blended well. Video was interesting. Never seen disco skating before. Music matched it well. Ended rather abruptly.

    @studs1966: Very professional production. Solid. Yeah this sounds like a good dance floor song. I like the piano break in the middle. Good job with the organ and string work too. Not my genre at all, but liking it none the less. Good singer. Yep.

    @trackedout: Like the bass driving sound. Good riffs. I like the smooth vocal style too. It kind of gets covered up now and then I felt, but you have a good voice.

    @rottencat: I lost myself in this one and enjoyed every bit of it. This I think has sold me on Eventide Blackhole (I've been on the fence getting it). My favorite part is at the 4:00 mark when the smooth sound comes in. I think @DavidEnglish's description of this song hit the nail on the head.

    Dav

  • @DavidEnglish
    Nice chilled vibe and I like most of the sounds. I’d have liked to have been taken on more of a voyage maybe?

    @Kitusai
    Another chilled vibe, I love the intro with the chopped up vocals. The bagpipes work well, even without the classic bagpipe drone. Which might have been fun ;-) as always a really nice overall soundscape.

    To answer your question, my track is in English. :-)

    @flickremix
    The overall sound and groove is very cool, but arrangement wise I kept waiting for a build up or another section to add contrast.

    @trackedout
    Nice slacker-ey lazy groove. I like the grungy guitar sound that kicks off the intro. Good song.

    @rottencat
    I’m liking the textures and the sounds. A little repetitive arrangement wise for my taste, but some good ideas in there.

    @dav
    Nice song. well recorded and the instrumentation and production gives the vocals the space to shine.

    @studs1966
    Nice 90s style dance track. Strong chorus with a good vocal performance and recording. Enough going on arrangement wise tio keep things interesting.
