-=Aphelian Guitar=- M1 IPad Pro limitations reached!
Got another one here, hot off the press!
Was messing around with the Aphelian stand alone app in AUM tonight. Had it driving 4 Audio Unit synths. Decided to add some extras, and in keeping up with the theme I’ve got going lately; created a new visual piece to go along with it. Please watch the video for all of the juicy details!
Thanks for watching and for listening!

Forgot to mention… this was produced and published 100% on the iPad.
This will actually be the seventh track published with the new M1, if you count the experimental pieces!
Here’s a few more tidbits of info:
I wanted to see what this new M1 IPP could do, so I really tried to push it to it’s limit with this piece!
Well, the mighty M1 has met it’s match!
I really hope Apple releases iPadOS 15 soon, with some much needed optimizations to fully unlock the M1’s potential (And I hope these app developers do the same!). I was actually rather surprised (and somewhat disappointed) that I was able to reach the 2021 M1 iPad Pro 12.9” 1TB’s limit so soon!
One important thing to note about all of this, is that all of the MIDI and Audio in this production (all of the Synthesizers, sequencers, and effects used in AUM) are one thing, then, running this Visual Synthesizer along side it all at the same time is totally something else!. In other words, a normal audio production could be taken much much further without having a resource hungry visualization app running at the same.
I really hope for Imaginando to update and fully optimize VS Visual Synthesizer to take advantage of the newer processor. I know they’re still working very hard on it as a new beta version was just released. (Thank you @sinosoidal and the rest of the amazing crew at Imaginando!)
So with all of the MIDI sequencing and audio processing going on, sending 5 MIDI channels of sequence data to VS - Visual Synthesizer was evidently too much for the M1 to handle! There is nothing quite like the sound of an iPad’s audio system starting to crackle and coming to a grinding halt right in the middle of a piece of music! It’s not a sound I’m very fond of, lemme tell you lol
The GF came running in the room last night “what’s wrong? What’s wrong?” as she heard me yelling and cursing 🤬
I had really gone beyond the limit now, so, instead of giving up, I dialed back some effects and ended up doing a screen capture of 3 or 4 layers of the VS visuals first, then came back and used said screen capture as a background in VS again, so I could afford a few more things on top. (Smoke and mirrors trick! 🤫)
One more thing! I will confess that I went against my normal policy of only doing a single take on my guitar track, and actually did 3 or 4 takes before I had a guitar track I was satisfied with here. I never have been a perfectionist in my musicianship, but I felt like you guys deserved better… ❤️
Updated thread title.
Any feedback, comments, or constructive criticism is well appreciated and always welcome! 🙏
I'm guessing this is the experiment you were talking about! (I also bought Aphelian recently on sale, but have not had a chance to try yet...)
As you mention, the visualisation app must be using a lot of system resources, but otherwise, I'm not sure why you ran into CPU-issues quite so soon. I wonder whether something else in the setup was using more resources than it should have been? Maybe RAM-hungry plugins like the Ravencroft piano and GeoSWAM cello are to blame perhaps?
I enjoyed your track, and have listened a couple of times - that Les Paul guitar really does sound amazing - well played!
Dang it! I always forget something… I totally meant to add this to the beginning of the video:
Best experienced with headphones
Thank you!
Yes, this is the one. I think my using the BETA of Visual Synthesizer might have a lot to do with it, not to mention the fact that I have it also driving an external 27” display through the HDMI port on my USB-C hub.
Sounds great. Nice guitar playing!
Thank you! 🙏 I appreciate the kind words!
excellent!!! Nice work.
Thanks! I appreciate you having a listen! 🙏
Awesome.
That's pushing the envelope.
Big up.
Too late.
Music room monitors.
Sounded good.
Thank you @Gravitas
I had fun creating it!
Well, as long as it sounded good! 🙏
I really liked your guitar tone and furthermore your playing. 🙏🏽
Aww thank you my friend! I appreciate that!
I was just reading about other users having some crackling issues while using Aphelian. Maybe that is what’s so resource hungry? Maybe running Aphelian (which has its own built in visualization features) and VS at the same time like I was here was the recipe for disaster?
Either way, more experiments are already underway. You’ve got me intrigued with your multitude of tracks in CB3!
Thanks again!
Nothing like a new hot rod to get your gears going. Not sure what Aphelian does, but your guitarism is excellent on this one. Output up, creativity up, visuals up and no smokes. Maybe ther’s more blood going to your brain!👍👍👍🙏
Good one. This is the first Aphelian thing I’ve heard that I liked.
Haha you might be right Mike!
Thanks for commenting on my “guitarism” (gives me an idea for a new track name ),
I figure if I try keeping things simple, and not over-do it, I’m less likely to screw it up! You know, less is more…
Aphelian Geometrical Sequencer has been around for a while evidently, but it just recently popped up in @Poppadocrock’s “iOS sales and discussion thread” for half price, so I snagged it!
I wouldn’t even know where to begin in explaining everything it can do, but it’s fascinating IMO. I could get lost in it for hours!

Thank you!
Yeah, I’ve noticed that not everything Aphelian produces will be “musical” if you let all 4 sequencers fire away with random shapes. But if one takes his time and dials in each shape, one at a time, and then either remove and/or add a note here or there, the results can be mind blowing, and you’ll have this amazing sequence that you’d never think up on your own.
Fantastic stuff… the guitar tone and playing / vibe reminds me of Daryl Stuermer and his excellent album ‘Go’… all meant as compliments👌
Wow - thank you Tony! 🙏
