ChordMapMidi - teaching an old dog new tricks
Thought I'd pass along this tidbit in case anyone is interested. Last night I was playing ChordMapMidi through Thumbjam as usual, but I was getting some really odd notes out of it, like the tonality was wildly off and I was making music in the bizarro world. Yet it was strangely satisfying too. I couldn't figure out what was happening until I compared settings between my iPad and iPhone Thumbjam apps.
Turned out there's a setting in Thumbjam midi control to "Input Scale Lock", which when turned on appears to remap the incoming notes to whatever scale you have set in Thumbjam. It happened to be Hungarian Minor at the time. The ChordMapMidi/Thumbjam combo was then building chords around that scale. Anyway it's a bit of a revelation for me, because I think that you should be able to force ChordMapMidi to play in a minor or modal key as you desire.
Now that I think about it, you could also do this with ANY app where Thumbjam is being used as an input device to render midi notes. It's particularly useful for ChordMapMidi though, since that app can only play in major keys.

Very interesting. Gotta try it with ChordPolyPad for more weirdness.
If you have Thumbjam already it's a no-brainer to spend $3 on ChordMapMidi. It's like having an IAP for Thumbjam that now adds chords at the touch of a button instead of notes. If you've never studied music theory the I, ii, iii, IV, V nomenclature might be a little confusing at first, but it should be easy to figure out. On their website there's actually an easy to follow tutorial of how the nomenclature system works here: http://mugglinworks.com/chordmaps/part2.htm and here: http://mugglinworks.com/chordmaps/part3.htm
This morning I was playing around with ChordMapMidi using the natural minor scale locked in Thumbjam and it sounds great. Note you need to lock down the '3' button on the app or else you'll be just playing fifths and it won't matter what scale you have locked in.
