Some apps can not be updated, why?

I've been strugging for a few days with updating 2 apps (Tunable and IMDb). I tap the update button, it starts downloading it, but finally the app is not being updated. I tap the update again and again, no success, but the apps (at least their un-updated version) still worked.

Then tried to delete one of the app and install it from scratch, I ended up the app does not work any longer, I just see its dark icon on the screen.
iPad restart did not help.

Is it the fault of the apps or something else is going on here? Never seen such issue before. If it was only 1 app I would say its an app fault, but it happened to 2 apps at the same time.

I have the same problem since about two or three days with IMDb and Vimeo. My iPad Pro 10.5 is on IOS 13.6

  • @GLacey What is your iOS version? The updated apps may not support it.

  • I'm on 13.7 (Air 3). App description says I need 11.0 at least, which is met.

  • Both IMDb, Vimeo and Tunable should work with minimum IOS 11. There is also around 40GB of free space available and other apps (also starting at IOS 11) manged to update.

I think the following may be relevant. With iOS 14.5, Apple introduced a new signing certificate (encryption key). This made some older apps unrunnable. Some of them could be repaired by Offload/Reload, others have simply died. I wonder if AppStore is now wrongly using this new key when downloading apps to older iOS versions, which don't support it. Since some apps update OK, this problem may only apply to those with very recent updates.

I just tried downloading Vimeo to my iPad Air with iOS 12.5.4 (current for this iPad). The download is stalled just before 75% complete, which may be the point where the download is decrypted. This may be what you're seeing. Your only option may be to wait for Apple to identify this and correct it. You could try reporting it at https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html, but they may not be interested in supporting a non-current OS version.

Edit: The older OS versions are still listed on the feedback page, so I have reported it.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Do you have several app store accounts? I get this behaviour when I am accidentally logged in with my development test account and try to update an app that I bought with my real account.

  • I’ve had this a few times (not recently)and corrected it by logging out and then back into the AppStore
