Dawn: My first collaboration track

This is my first full collaboration. I saw a Tweet from Lxbster, the other artist, asking if someone wanted to put drums over a melody he had created. I listened and felt inspired so I had him send me the audio and the MIDI. I used the MIDI in a second channel with BLEASS Alpha.

When the song starts, you first hear Alpha and then the strings sent by Lxbster fade in quickly. I also added the drums and bass. The second melody was created by chopping the MIDI of the original melody. It’s played across the same Alpha instrument as the first melody and then a second Alpha instrument along side it.

I used EG Pulse’s R&B kit for the drums with my own MIDI. I used Bass 808 for the bass and my own MIDI.

As usual, I composed it in Cubasis 3 then created the mixdown and imported into AUM. There I applied a number of effects including Spatializer, TB ReelBus, TB Compressor, TB Equaliser, and TB Barricade. I believe I also played around with BLEASS Chorus and Phaser but can’t remember if either made it to the final mix.

Edit: This is my fastest produced track. It was completed in roughly 3 hours over the course of two days. I’m extremely proud of it.

So you do you mastering in AUM? What are the advantage?

I do my mixing and mastering in AUM, yeah. It’s a low resource host with excellent bussing. Trying to add all of the AUs I need in CB3 can be pretty unstable. And CB3’s bussing has a lot to be desired. But I AUM, I can use a combination of built in functionality and AUs to do everything I need to. I rarely have CPU or DSP issues and I can cram a lot in there.

It also keeps me from fussing with the composition and arrangement too much during the mixing phase.
