hooking things up
I had things all hooked up once but apparently i got confused with all this, I'm aging and just get confused these days so please be understanding. I have my guitar, audio interface, usb hub as well and for now i have headphones untill i can get either a studio monitor, i do not even know if i need a usb hub just for my guitar to jame with th-U, so how do i hook all these things up just to jam with my guitar using the amp sims?
Comments
correction I also have my lightning camera kit
and my usb hub, sorry forgot to mention that as well
What audio interface do you own?
Does your audio interface have a lightning connected cable option? (I'm assuming your IOS device has a lightning connector). If yes, plug it in.
Did the IOS device provide enough power for the device to power up? If yes, plug in the guitar cord. Check for sound coming into TH-U.
If the audio interface needs to be powered, then your USB Hub may be needed to power the audio interface and potentially the IOS device. Plug both IOS device and audio interface into USB Hub. Does the Hub have a power cable? Does the IOS device show connection to power now? Does the audio interface power up? If YES to all then connect guitar and start TH-U.
the audio interface does not have that option, just usb
I bet many would pay to have a consultant figure this out. In fact, here's an idea for an enterprising YouTuber. Accept commissions from helpless gear-hoarders: $25? $35? You receive a list of gear and apps from the customer and then draw up the schematic of cables and screenshots of midi routing.
@jdolecek49 - First try just plugging your audio interface into the iPad through the the camera connection kit (CCK). You may need to connect power to the lightning port of the CCK to power your interface. Please let us know what audio interface you're using.
Important: If your headphones have a microphone plug these in first and then the interface. The reason is iOS sees a microphone as an audio interface, and it only allows one audio interface at a time. Whichever is plugged in last takes over. So, the guitar interface needs to be plugged in last. If there's no microphone then you don't need to worry about this. Also, ignore this if you're plugging the headphones in to the interface rather than the iPad.
If you want to hook up more than just the audio interface, such as adding a USB midi controller or something, then you can use the hub (interface > hub > CCK > iPad).
That's the best I can do without more info about which audio interface you're using and what model of iPad.
I prefer the Camera Connector Kit version that includes a Lightning Power port so the iPad
can have additional power to be the power source for the audio adapter and/or a USB Hub.
But many Hubs can also be the source of extra power for connected devices.
For me, I have a couple guitar options:
1) the CCK (with a connection to a 5V power "wall wart" adapter or battery unit)
2) my Presonus Audio interface
3) guitar cable
An iRig HD guitar interface with a guitar cable. The iRig has Lightning cable and draws very little power from the IOS device. Good to velcro the required devices and cable to the guitar.

the interface im using is the m-audio m-track duo
I would plug the headphones and the guitar into your USB audio interface.
It doesn't sound like you need a USB hub if you use a powered CCK. Plug your audio interface and a charging cable into your CCK and plug CCK into iOS device.
headphones + guitar => USB audio interface + power => CCK => iOS
I used to get hired to troubleshoot studios
and if necessary a total rewire and overhaul.
I just cannot get any sound, well i get sound but its a dry guitar sound while plugging in directly into my CCK, but it should not require a powered usb hub right? i'm not sure wht else to try, any suggestions?
@jdolecek49 You just need to methodically write out the chain of connections for the people in this thread to get the best picture of what’s happening. What does “plugging in directly into my CCK” mean, exactly? Are you doing what @mojozart suggests (“ headphones + guitar => USB audio interface + power => CCK => iOS”)?
When you say “i get sound but its a dry guitar sound”, where is that sound coming from? Your interface? Is the iPad registering that sound in any apps?
i have my interface working and all but in cant seem go get any sound coming from my amp sims
im not getting any input signal at all and have no clue why please help
got it
@jdolecek49 it’s your audio interface my friend.
Direct quote from the manufacturer website:
iOS users: The power available from an iOS device is not sufficient to power M-Track Duo. Use the Apple Camera Connection Kit (sold separately), a USB break-out cable (sold separately), and a USB power adapter (sold separately) which will provide an additional USB connector to power M-Track Duo
You are not sufficiently powering your interface, if at all. Generally interfaces or midi devices or anything really that uses a USB-B to USB-A wire are barely bus powered nor class compliant, they need a separate power source.
Also, did you just get this interface? Why are you messing with this? Price point? It only goes up to 16 bit / 48kHz, that’s not even acceptable. You need at least a 24 bit / 96kHz interface, that’s basically a standard. The M-track duo mentions iOS only in passing, it’s really a beginner mac/pc interface, not really iOS class compliant.
Can you stretch your budget? Audient Evo4, so many more in that price point…
EDIT: sweetwater claims the m-track solo and duo are 16 bit only, other sites say it’s 24 bit. Confusing. I wonder about the quality of these… for iOS you really could benefit from a bus powered interface, there are so many that don’t require any external power and will work just off your iPad/iPhone

You’re not alone with the frustration…
“Adoption of Core Audio also equals iOS compatibility – on the face of it, great news for music-making – but the implementation here is disappointingly clunky. As well as the relevant (costly) Apple brand USB connection kit, users also have to work out a way of powering the audio interface using a USB breakout cable, so more investment and head-scratching required. More helpfully, most other manufacturers include additional ports to help provide power to the interface while also connecting to hardware running iOS. I think potential buyers would pay a little more to have their audio gear work more painlessly with iOS!”
Ok I give in now it won’t work I will pay if anyone will help me
I know I would
Ok I just sound a used focusrite Scarlett will that do the job?
It depends on the Scarlett, which one and which generation? 2nd or 3rd Gen? By the way, what iOS device are you using, and what type of connector on the device?
It’s a 2nd genso will that not work? Using myipad
Should be much better. Very popular low cost audio interface. Like my Presonus you may have to pay attention to having a source of power beyond the IOS device to fire it up. I think you mentioned you have that.
But which iPad? A usb-c iPad or a lightning connector iPad.
Is there a USB-C CCK adapter? I got a USB Hub that has a USB-C pigtail. That works for
my wife's iPad Pro to let me connect all the audio devices my older iPad supports.
Lightning connector ipad
That should work with a second gen Scarlett, probably needs the ckk connection kit, maybe the Scarlett will also need a firmware update. Depending on how cheap the one you found is, you should consider other newer options. You are looking for a 2 channel interface? Or just an interface with a single mono in and stereo out for guitar?
The scarletts are good and popular, but their compatibility varies with the model. I think the 3rd gen works much better with usbc iPads.
So I called sweetwater and they had an irig2 and the sales guy said it would work well, so i went ahead and ordered one so what is your opinion on the irig2 interface??? good choice or too much of an impulse purchase?
I ordered a irig2 interface because sweetwater said it would be perfect, what do you think of the irig2?
