Studio monitors, PA, HiFi
I mostly use my ipad with headphones. I sometimes use my 7 year old cheap surround sound system to play around on. I am looking t upgrade my speaker setup. I am not really looking to be mixing and mastering any high quality projects.
I am looking for a system/setup to do some performances in my house or someone else's house (maybe a backyard now that the weather is nice) with at most 15-20 people. We host a home church group sometimes and we do worship guitars only. I was thinking powered PA speakers but those are pricey. Then I thought maybe just get one speaker for now to save money.
Any suggestions?

I just bought this..

Pretty nice, but the USB OP doesn't split out individual tracks...just a stereo mix down. Aside from that, I like the ability to do panning, effects send, and EQ on a per track basis. The price is very reasonable. For the OP, just send to a stereo or powered monitors and you have a pretty nice, portable solution.
I have made me a setup for performances in the home/garden, consisting of 2x2 JBL Control One Pro, powered by 2 T-Amps E400, completed by an active Sub 15". Makes a pretty versatile sound, can get quite loud (my room has about 25 qm). I do experimental frequency-modulated stereo-or quadraphonic setups, and since I can't afford a professional PA, I think this is getting close to the SPL I need... . The Control Ones do really sound rather full (especially when combined with a low-end Sub). The outputs of my interface go straight into the Amps (which are a bit noisy, so for silent periods in the show they will have to be positioned ouside the room...), and off you go. My setup requires a PC, too, though, for variable pan-routing (Mac with Logic 9).
I also am interested in anybody else's setup (mine isn't really very portable, is it?) Care to share?
Cheers, tobias
I'm very happy with my Yamaha HS80, I own Yamaha NS10 since 1994 and after some changes (Tannoy Reveal) I comeback to Yamaha which is the best for me, that now are replaces with HS8 and there is the white one that are very sexy:

For an outdoor thing, i have used this to my satifaction. http://www.ionaudio.com/products/details/explorer-bluetooth
For indoor studio use, sub $500, hard to beat these. http://www.monoprice.com/mobile/Product/Details/605800?mainCategoryId=115&categoryId=11504&subCategoryId=1150401
I picked up a pair of M-Audio AV40's that I have been pretty happy with. Especially for $100.00!
I've had occasion to use a few different versions of these single mackie self powered speakers before and been happy with them. Edit: Looks like the ones I used are no longer made. This is the new juice: http://www.amazon.com/Mackie-SRM150-5-25-Inch-Compact-Active/dp/B003552MFI There are other single speaker PA setups like these: http://www.sweetwater.com/c442--All_in_one_PA_Systems
Or get yourself a nice compact(ish) stereo setup. If you're not going to use them to play live that often, why not get something that you'll get enjoyment from for other purposes in between performances?
PS. Goodwill and similar will happily sell you a very nice 70s-80s stereo amp and speakers set for $50-$150. Might not be the most portable but they can sound great and get awfully loud.

I have also a pair of these. Sound great imo!
Guitar center has the maudio bx8's on sale $149 each. I am leaning very hard towards these.

I talked to a lot of guitar guys before buying a studio monitor - ended up with the M-Audio BX5, which is the same one but with a 5" cone ($100 sale). I'm happy with it, but the other two that were quite popular in that price range were the KRK Rokkit and the Yamaha model (especially the latter).
Recently bought the HS8's. I'm pleased so far. They produce just as advertised. Plenty of bass but of course you have the option of adding the matching sub down the road if you're inclined.
My wife got me my early Father's Day present. A pair of m-audio bx8s. So far they sound amazing to my untrained/non-professional ears.
