    It's a pretty underwhelming update.

  • There’s quite a bit they could have done, still no VST3 even ☹️ The new combinator is nice as you can design the UI but no major sequencer updates.
They seem to be more into subscription and sound pack content stuff.

  • I love Reason, and that new Combinator looks like a winner, but this has the feel of a 'catch up' update to me. I can almost hear them in the bean bag room. Let's stay relevant! And sell sound packs! And make record profits in Q4!

Coming from Reason 11, existing fan-customer-musicians must pay €129 to get 3 things, 2 of which feel like maintenance work to me (hi res graphics & the Combinator refresh). Obviously, I'll get it, and I do appreciate that they're working hard to keep this wonderful thing alive, but I might wait for a sale (Black Friday?) or Xmas or something, or maybe I will skip a version. I wish they'd thrown in Friktion and/or Algoritm but I guess corporate weren't having it.

  • I'll give it a try since (finally) the GUI is scalable

  • I’ve been skipping every other version update for Reason, and think I’ll do the same for this one. I don’t use it that often, and don’t think this is really worth an upgrade.

  • Release notes are here:
    https://www.reasonstudios.com/en/reason/updates/release-notes

Is it weird that they're already up to v12.2.0?

I think if I download it I'll buy it, so holding off for now. Will wait a few months and see if there's a Black Friday deal on upgrades.

My Bitwig license lapsed a few months ago and I haven't refreshed that one yet, but I will.

OT corner: Bitwig has a crossgrade offer right now, so if anybody's been eyeing it up from yon knoll, you can get a discount! If - and only if - you already own a full license for one of the other desktop DAWs (Reason, Logic, Ableton, Studio One, Cubase, Reaper etc.). This offer expires on the 13th, which is Monday after next:

This feels like a point release.

Retina graphics are nice, but to be honest I couldn’t believe 11 was still lo-res when I upgraded a very old version.

I guess upgrading from version 5, or whichever version I last used, to 11 Suite was such a huge upgrade anything was going to feel underwhelming compared to that. I had low expectations. They weren’t met.

By comparison, every point release in Logic X pro have been way more impressive than Reason 11->12. For free.

I think will wait to have to hi-res graphics and hope that reason doesn’t become subscription only in the meantime.

I’m loving having reason devices in Logic though. Proper, actual, game changer. Reason has gone from not being used by me at all to getting lots of use within Logic.

11 is good enough. I will be frustrated by lo-res UI but more pixels won’t help make anything sound better.

There was just one recently, some 30% off flash sale :). Those seem to come up quite regular.

  • Crap! I was gonna wait.

  • This is interesting viz Reason 12. Had VST3 been in there from the get go it would have been a more compelling update https://www.reasonstudios.com/blog/roadmap-for-reason

  • Time to abandon ship

Really poor update IMO. The graphics are just a ‘keep the software relevant’ necessity. The sampler is unimpressive. The combinator is fun but pretty basic. Some supportive (I don’t like the phrase fanboys  ) videos are even touting the search bar as a reason to upgrade!

Totally uninspiring. Definitely a version to skip IMO.

[In fact, I’m going to try to sell my Reason 11 license. Reason Complete on iOS was nonsense and now this upgrade. I think they have lost their way. $150 on KVR if you’re interested lol]

I'm trying out Reason+ with the 1€ 3 / months thing. It's cool, but the coolest stuff like Algorithm isn't even in the base package of Reason 12. Seems like they are trying to force people into the subscription model.

Mimic is O.K, it's fun to play with but not revolutionary. I don't see that it has an edge over other stock samplers like Simpler.

  • If you've kept up your updates over the years Reason 11 was a pretty essential upgrade in the sense that it allowed artists to utilise Reason as VST/AU in a more specialist DAW. Reason 12 is hard to justify for the upgrade price, and judging by the tone of recent news posted on the Reason blog, it appears that Reason HQ know this is a thin upgrade.

  • Ugh.

It won't be like this forever. It's that investment group, Verdane. All of these decisions. They won't stick around long-term. Their whole motivation is selling the company for a profit (they want to leave!) but for now, good faith and customer loyalty have gone out the window.

    Hole for a soul.

I hope they sell it to a music company.

  • outside of discussion about business model, updates and all about R12 there is interesting post from Reason's worker, who mentions RS mobile apps:
    https://forum.reasontalk.com/viewtopic.php?p=574777&sid=b01a7bf32579d8f1761b4fb6f79bb873#p574777

"development was stopped on the mobile apps,"

It looks they really discontiniued the ios apps - they focus on R12/R+ for now.
