Audient iD14 MKII I/O routing
Hi,
Does anybody use the Audient iD14 MKII on an iPad? I'm not sure if I'm missing something trivial but I'm not getting the basic routing to work. I plugged a mic into input 1 and added output 1/2 to the channel, worked fine. Then I changed to output 3/4, no sound at all, same for the headphones output 5/6, simply nothing. However I do hear the signal on output 1/2 via headphones as well. So essentially it seems that the device is reduced to a 2in / 2out interface under iOS, which I just cannot believe.
Feel free to call me an idiot and let me know what I did wrong ;-)
Thanks!
Henry

If you can "see" the different outputs in Audiobus, they should be working. Audiobus only offers outputs recognized by the iOS driver. Are there any settings or controls on the Audient unit that might affect this? Is there a configuration program for a computer?
Please identify your iPad model and iPadOS version. They can make a difference.
Are those outputs connected to anything? And is the volume turned up?
There‘s no Audient control panel (for routing) in IOS.
You should see the ID14 as a 10 input, 6 output unit, though, f.e. in AUM.
But you can not adress outputs from IOS, it only identifies ports available.
(a dedicated DSP in the interface controls IO)
Similiar applies to digital inputs, which can be either S/PDIF or Adat. Their state depends on the default firmware setting if you cannot use the DSP control panel.
Audient suggests to configure the unit on a PC/Mac and after that unplug the cable (without powering down the interface) and plug the cable into an IOS device.
Then IOS sees the new routing, but will forget about it once the interface is powered down.
The ID44 has a newly designed circuit, which stores settings onboard, so you have to do the procedure only once.
I know it‘s kind of shitty (have an ID22 myself), but the performance of it‘s preamps and the monitor section are worth the hassle (imho) ... at least if you have another desktop/notebook.
I can confirm that I can see all the INs (10) and OUTs (6) in AUM where I also did the testing.
What I don't understand is what I'd need to configure on my Mac? The routing table looks like this:
And I'd assume that I'd use AUM to basically define the columns (mixes) to be routed to the individual outputs, right? So how would the Mac-configuration map to the AUM setup?
However this is extremely disappointing, isn't it a minimum requirement that you can route a signal from an input to one of the available outputs? The two stereo outputs plus a dedicated mix for the headphone out seemed to be exactly what I was looking for.
@Telefunky just to confirm: the things you wrote apply for the ID14 MKII as well? You're not referring to the MKI?
I sent a support request to Audient, but from what I read on the web they are not very responsive. Let's see.
Do you guy know any other interfaces with two stereo channel and an independent headphones mix? I know theres the Motu Microbook IIc but it seems rather old and some of the connectors are 3.5 and latency might also be a topic.
@Telefunky just tested the procedure as described above:
:: Kept the interface on the powered USB Hub
:: connected the Mac and set everything to DAW THRU
:: disconnected the Mac and connected the iPad
-> routing possible for all channels in AUM
:: shortly disconnected the interface from power supply
-> all back to 2in / 2out
I just can't believe it. What an incredible fail on an otherwise great product...
Going through the procedure above is not acceptable. For me that only leaves the question if this can be fixed via Firmware Update or if they'll bring an iOS app for the routing.
Did quite some research over the last week and this limitation was mentioned nowhere.
I‘ve mentioned it since the ID22 (their 1st interface) was released ...
(but it wasn‘t always that hard, at least a faint memory tells me Adat io was enabled in some earlier firmware, but later got muted as default)
If the firmware would start with DAW through enabled (as in your test) that would cover the majority of cases in IOS.
On the other hand most users just want the 2 mic channels, DI and „standard“ monitoring, which all runs out of box - and considering the audio quality... the unit is a bargain. Seriously.
The worst thing is that it indeed sounds great, latency is fine and what's most impressive is the complete absence of any noise.
Maybe they can provide a custom firmware file with DAW THRU activated by default... or I need to find a way to keep my unit powered forever.
i hear ya. it's in the top 2 or 3 in terms of lowest noise floor among all the other interfaces with similar I/O count. really impressive.
i do wish the mac editor could save states better or run on iOS..cuz i want to use the ID button as a MONO button but it only works on desktop.
@BitterGums are you aware of any interfaces with similar I/O count? I found the MOTU Microbook 2c which seems to be outdated and the iConnectivity 4c which is a different league regarding the price. Any other options?
The iConnectAudio4 interfaces have a double host feature, which essentially makes them 2 interfaces in 1 housing. Hence the pricepoint.
But they are clearly below Audient regarding audio quality. I have both an iCA4+ and an ID22.
Still I kept the iCA4+ for it‘s shere versatility, mainly for routing 10 audio channels between 2 hosts in low latency.
If you want the „Audient sound“, there‘s no alternative imho.
Even the ID44 (though more pricey) is very attractive with it’s 16 digital channels, hardware insert, 4 micpres. Can be a professional studio core for a lifetime.
According to my personal taste it beats the RME and UAD equivalents with their „clinical“ precision. (RME and UAD have identical input stages)
Both are significantly more expensive than the ID Interfaces regarding mic channels.
My focus is on live applications so I’d compromise on audio quality for low latency and flexible routing. Looked at the ID44 but it’s quite a bulky device, feature-wise much more than what I’ll ever need and far beyond budget.
Then the new iCA4 is worth a deeper look, in particular if you could get along with their „old“ control panel/routing software.
This software is essential for unleashing the interfaces capabilities, but not supported by it‘s makers anymore. (the follow-up Auricle software is (sorry) a piece of shit)
At least some here have confirmed that the old iConfig is able control the iCA4, too.
(you just need it to setup the routing, which is then stored on the interface)
While iConfig isn‘t the most intuitive design, it‘s plain logic in the end and functional.
You get 4 physical in/outs and upto 20 software-channels to distribute between 2 devices.
(any mixture from IOS/Win/Mac).
The software channels can be set as 10 stereo busses, f.e. 5 stereo from A to B and 5 stereo from B to A. Any combination possible as long as the channel sum doesn‘t exceed 20.
It‘s outstanding in that domain - still no other supplier with a similiar product.
Audient also have the lower end Evo 4, which I have and works fine with iOS - 2 mic/line/inst in, 2 out. And Evo 8 which isn’t supported on iOS, maybe parts work in practise.
The EVOs are just regular interfaces, probably ok... but the Audient label has no influence on sound
Have you looked at the AudioFuse by arturia? Lot's of I/O.
The Steinberg UR-22 has a USB-C version and is comparable to the Motu. It has 32bit A/Ds and 'zero' latency.
I'm going through an iPad audio interface marathon at the moment. These were the candidates / verdicts so far:
Tested:
:: Audient iD14, my dream interface if it wouldn't suffer from the routing amnesia on iPad
:: motu Microbook IIc, bad joke, completely outdated obviously, seems it's neither supported on any current Mac nor iPad anymore. Same applies for the Mac mixer software and even the firmware updater
:: Arturia AudioFuse Rev2, good sound and ADAT extensible but on the other hand rather inflexible in terms of routing with the built-in I/O and too costly if you don't need the digital extension points. Some cool features though like the built-in USB hub. For me the cost / benefit ratio did not work.
Current / next candidates:
:: Roland Rubix24: just started my test but so far works well. What's actually quite good is that a lot of features can be toggled with phyisical buttons or switches, other interfaces don't seem to have any buttons at all anymore (e.g. Scarletts). It worked with the iPad literally out of the box, no Mac-base pre-setup. Still need to get a feeling for latency (btw. can latency be measured on iPad, somewhere in AUM maybe?) The device itself is quite heavy but the form factor would still be ok for mobile use I guess.
:: SSL2+ will arrive tomorrow. Already hate the fact outputs 3/4 are RCA (WHY??) but want to give it a chance as well.
:: motu M4: seems to be completely sold out everywhere. Maybe I get a unit in about 2 wks
:: RME Babyface Pro FS: probably won't order it due to crazy price point (EUR 700!). However it seems to be best in class from what I could read on the web. Scanning through the manual I noticed some aspects that I did not really like: output 3/4 is basically headphones only and Class Compliant mode seems to have some restrictions
:: Steinberg UR24c: looks promising but I don't understand the monitoring features (DAW vs. DJ)
Will post an update once I made a final decision.
Just because I promised to leave a comment about my final decision:
I ended up with the MOTU M4 as it
:: works instantly with the iPad as you would expect it (no Mac/PC pre-config bullshit)
:: has a solid sound and acceptable latency (iPad-based Playback Monitoring absolutely fine)
:: is very robust and has a power switch
:: can work as a basic 4 channel mixer standalone
Best sound of all interfaces I tested, in my humble opinion, had the SSL2+ and I also liked the additional Headphone Out but the device feels like a cheap plastic toy which is a real shame. Nevertheless it would be my home-use-only winner but I wanted something durable.
Hey @h9nry any longterm review notes on your interface choice?
This is what I found, as I’m considering to purchase this soundcard:

This is the same setting I need for my LaunchKey mini mkIII.
Hope it helps,
Art
Any news over this thread? Are the I/o of the Audient seen in iOS and if not, is it not for all the audient interfaces? For the idw4 as well? Thank you!
Hi @joaehun, I was able to connect my ID14mkII, at first, but recently - probably because of IOS17 upgrade - I'm having issues and I turned back using my Zoom H4N; I hope they'll solve the issue soon...
Thanks for the answer @arfo62 . Do you remember if you were able to see the different output sources on your iOS system when you were using your ID14mkII?
You’re welcome! By memory I would say no…
I saw you wrote in another thread where I posted too for asking help with the new situation but no one answered so far… 🤷🏻
