-=Darkest Skies=- (an ambient piece by Edward Alexander)

Inspired by some of the best ambient music I’ve heard in recent times; that which has been posted by members of the AudioBus Forums, I’ve created an ambient soundscape that reflects how I feel, given the current state of the world.

Whoever you are out there, if you’re listening, I hope you find your inner peace✌️

I’ve also been influenced by artists like @LinearLineman who graciously pointed out that not every piece of music needs a drum beat. Thank you Mike! 🙏

  • I feel like the visuals express the mood of your piece. The dark broody undertone of the synths feel like the clouds in your video with the bright lights piercing through like the horn and guitar. I watched this all the way through and then listened again with my eyes closed. Ambient rarely appeals to me, but you’ve created something special here.

  • It's good. I like ambient pieces like this. Some ambient songs don't have enough going on to hold my attention, but yours does. Good visual work as well. Nice to know whats playing under the hood. That SWAM Flugelhorn sounds really impressive with the reverb - sounds more like a jazz trumpet to me though instead of a flugel, but for a fake brass it sounds pretty musical (trumpet player here).

  • Nice. Actually very nice. Thanks for keeping it up. I need the motivation!!! 😀

  • imho, this is the best audio/visual piece you have done so far. Straight A’s in every aspect, I think.

I’m not sure it’s ambient, but I do understand it reflects your current feelings. If I could change any thing I would switch out the trumpets for a synth brass sound. More in keeping with the electronic nature of the piece. And also... it ends abruptly! User error, I think. You might want to fix that. It spoils the engaging dark mood.

I kept waiting for th drums... what a relief... they never came. 😉😘🙏🏻

  • You certainly put us in sync with your mood. Awesome piece, brother. Great atmosphere

Ok, I did a little trim of the end of the video. You’re right, it does chop off at the end. Maybe my edit will suffice.

What about the nylon guitar string sound?

I thought about some bongos or shakers, but then it’d be even further from ambient.

I’m fine with the guitar. I’m sure lots of listeners would have no prob with the trumpet. It just took me away from the electronic thrust of the piece. It reminded me of stuff I had heard before like that. An overused sound, I guess. Just my opinion, of course. The cut off end, OTOH, (now I've heard it twice)... must be fixed.😡😎

The abrupt cutoff at the end should be fixed now.

writes down notes on “how to get people to listen to your track 3 times”

  • I’ve no idea if it is ambient. All these genres and sub genres confuse the c!§p out of me. I do know it’s a great piece of music. Perhaps replace the trumpet with some tasteful kazoo?😊

  • Great stuff man!

    lol!

Thanks Tony! I thought it was “ambient”, probably closer to ambient than any of my other stuff. “Soundscape”?

wonders if they make an electric kazoo that you can plug into guitar pedals 🤓🤔

I hope the sound quality and mix sound good on everyone’s different systems! I did make sure that MDES had the last say so on what was being heard. As you well know, there’s a balance to be had when composing these visual pieces.

  • One last thing to consider... I like the titles, generally, but on this one it distracted me from both the audio and beauty of the visual. Would have liked it pristine, you know? You lost the drums... maybe the captions next?

You know what, I have a version just for you! 😃 (I’ll post shortly)

  • I finally pulled the plug on getting the full version of Aparillo because of this track. I don't mind that it's $24.99, I hate that it's iPad-only, but that drone! 🤩

As someone else said above, I'm not entirely sure this is Ambient, but who cares? This is great music, period. :)

Nice piece. I too am of the ‘not every track needs drums’ school. Pretty sure it doesn’t fit the definition of ambient though, at least as far as Wikipedia understands it:

“ Ambient music is a genre of music that emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. A form of instrumental music, it may lack net composition, beat, or structured melody. It uses textural layers of sound which can reward both passive and active listening, and encourage a sense of calm or contemplation. The genre is said to evoke an "atmospheric", "visual", or "unobtrusive" quality. Nature soundscapes may be included, and the sounds of acoustic instruments such as the piano, strings and flute may be emulated through a synthesizer.”

And it certainly isn’t ‘discrete music’, in the sense defined by the Godfather himself:

“Eno opined that ambient music "must be as ignorable as it is interesting."

You, sir, are hereby found guilty of being too interesting. ;)

Ok I’m going to have to argue my case here (not that it really matters to anyone), but being that several people felt the need to point out that they don’t think this is “ambient”.

“ Ambient music is a genre of music that emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm

Ok, I think I’ve got that. Plenty of emphasis on tone and definitely atmosphere.

“Traditional” musical “structure” and rhythm are absent. The way I normally see musical structure anyway.

Each element has its own chance. For example, some parts might be 8 bars long, where others might only contain a short momentary part that occurs only every 12th bar. This places things in different spots for a semi generative feeling.

A form of instrumental music, it may lack net composition, beat, or structured melody.

No drums or defined “beat” here. See above for “structured” melody.

It uses textural layers of soundwhich can reward both passive and active listening, and encourage a sense of calm or contemplation. The genre is said to evoke an "atmospheric", "visual", or "unobtrusive" quality. Nature soundscapes may be included, and the sounds of acoustic instruments such as the piano, strings and flute may be emulated through a synthesizer.

    Check, check, and check!

I mean, are you guys reading the same definition of ambient music as I am?

And it certainly isn’t ‘discrete music’, in the sense defined by the Godfather himself:

“Eno opined that ambient music "must be as ignorable as it is interesting."

You, sir, are hereby found guilty of being too interesting. ;)

    Doesn’t he say “must be”?

At the end of the day, I don’t think it really matters. It’s not like I’m dying to prove that this is “ambient”, but given the Wiki definition you shared, I’d have to say it’s littered with all kinds of ambient attributes, to the point where (after reading the wiki definition) I’m convinced it’s even more ambient than even I originally thought.

How about “Melodic Ambient Soundscapesque”? 😃🤙
