  • Some advice on soldering - find an old trashed circuit board from anything, and practice soldering on it. You’d be amazed at how quickly you can improve your skills when you’re working with pieces of junk.

A cheaper/easier alternative is to grab a $50 Evolution xSession or UC-16 midi controller, print out a template, apply double-sided tape then midi-learn away:

I tried this with my BeatStep Pro and LaunchControl XL and it didn’t work for me. Two things. The generic controllers usually very often have only knobs and no buttons and if they have buttons then usually the visual feedback is not working or is problematic. Moreover you can not really replicate the original workflow because that requires a meaningful grouping of knobs, buttons and switches.

The DIY controller has it all. It almost exactly replicates the original. Anyway, I already ordered the parts and I spent about 100 EUR for one controller. My version will be in white and as the minimum order quantity for the PCBs was 5, I have some spare PCBs to sell.

Hmmm… I actually wonder if this couldn‘t be a business to offer specialized replica control surfaces for software synths. 🤔

I wonder if Uli Behringer has thought about it? They seem to be the experts at re-creating/creating equipment for the synth crowd.
