Low or no audio out via usb [finally fixed by re-installing AB]
When I choose the iPad headphone out I get signal. This does not happen with the old alesis iodock (but there are other problems when using that.)
Comments
If the volume is just low, check the iPad volume control (in Control Center). Apple likes to turn it down to protect us. It has different settings for each possible output.
What a simple godsend of an answer! I didn't know about control center and figured that all usb volume adjustments had to come from the interface. First I had this issue with a non-apple charging camera connector, so I was naturally disappointed when getting an apple one didn't fix it. But now I am vindicated because the control center remedy only works with the apple adapter.
Unfortunately, after remedying the problem initially, the control center slider now can only take the usb audio out from no volume to low volume again. Since AB can output to the headphone jack I will just configure all my AB presets to use that to avoid continued frustration. But I still wonder why others aren't having this issue...
@jeffry whenever I've used external audio interfaces, I haven't been able to set the volume with the ipad volume buttons or control center, I can only set it on the interface itself (this is similar to how interfaces work on the Mac as well). What interface are you using?
Are you using the Apple CCK? Or a generic?
In general if an audio interface has a volume control then the device volume control is disabled (as you say). However, there are a number of interfaces that don’t (like a line 6 Sonic port) and they still use the iOS device volume controls.
I use m-audio m-track plus, but have the same issue with the Behringer UM-2.
Perhaps it was a coincidence that the problem seemed to be temporarily fixed by the control center slider...
Are you talking about trying to control an external audio interface's output level? To whatever extent adjusting the volume on your iPad affects the output level, it will still be (for most audio interfaces) subject to the output level set on the interface. Have you tried adjusting the interface's output level?
From what you write, it sounds like maybe output level is not set very high on the interface which would limit the maximum output level you will achieve. Maybe I am misunderstanding the situation.
Thanks for considering my situation! The interface volume is set to the max. This has been an issue ever since I switched to the apple "camera" connector from the alesis iodock [the latter having the disadvantage of not being able to connect my usb foot pedals and the phantom power imposing audio clicks].
This sounds unusual. I think most of us with audio interfaces use the Apple Camera Connector and don't have problems with audio output level. This sounds like there may be something defective or misconfigured...but you haven't shared much detail. So, it is hard to know what might be going on.
What hardware and IOS version are you using?
@jeffry - I think you could be looking at it backwards.
I bet the iodock is actually boosting the signal and you're not getting that added boost without it. I see that it has gain knobs for the inputs and volume controls for the outputs. Unless those are just passive "cut" only, there could be boosting going on.
The hardware is iPad8 running OS 14.7.1, the interface [and alternate interface] listed above. This seems to be an audiobus problem, as my usb out works fine for apps launched outside of AB. For example, KQ Dixie doesn't make any sound [whether loaded as app or au] within AB, but is easily heard when launched stand-alone.
That's very odd. Does that happen when you play Dixie using its built-in keyboard? If you're using an external KB, you need to connect it on the MIDI page of Audiobus. Is Dixie unmuted on the Audiobus Mixer page?
Edit: When you tap on the Output [+] on the Audiobus Audio page and select System from the bottom of the popup, does it offer your interface? That will show that it recognizes the interface and is sending to it.
Also, I hope you're not seeing the "Audio engine not running" popup described in this thread.
@jeffry Is there any chance you're connecting two audio interfaces, maybe a headphone DAC or something. iPadOS will only connect to the most recently connected interface. The one currently connected will be listed in Control Center, when you tap on the circles in the upper right.
Based on suggestions by Uncle Dave, I pulled down the control center while KQDixie was loaded, but not sounding from its internal keyboard, in AB. Audiobus was listed at the top. Then when I opened KQDixie stand-alone, with its internal keyboard now producing audio at the usb out, the control center showed "Audiobus previously" at the top. When I restarted the iPad and then checked the control center, after booting up KQDixie stand-alone and checking it could again be heard, nothing was listed at the top.
Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. What you see is what is (or was) playing. You need to tap on the circles icon in the corner (red arrow in first photo) to see the output device (BlueTooth to Yamaha in the second photo. You should see your audio interface selected there.
Yes, thanks, I do see my m-audio interface listed there with a check mark and a speaker icon to its left, but unlike yours the volume slider is greyed out--a line without a circle.
@jeffry: a few things:
does this only happen when you are hosting things in Audiobus?
in the Audiobus mixer page what do the output levels look like?
do you have AUM or another host? What happens there?
have you tried disconnecting everything and doing a hard reset and then rebooting and then reconnecting things?
you might want to give the thread a meaningful title. This doesn’t seem like a cck issue from anything you’ve posted.
I can host au in midiguitar with good usb audio out. Swiping down on the control center shows an active slider above the checked off m-audio interface name unlike the greyed out one when within AB. I would just switch to using midiguitar as host were it not for its lack of midi learn and that, as I just learned, bleass granualizer crashes it. Oh and yes, when using AB the output levels show as active, but only visually.
@jeffry : please change the thread title. Whatever the issue is. It seems unrelated to the camera connection kit.
Have you done a hard reset and reconnected everything?
You might try deleting Audiobus and reinstalling it.
Do you have AUM?
Hmmm. You might check if your AB is up to date. The latest is 3.4.33, shown at the bottom of settings in AB. And try @espiegel123 's suggestions.
Thank you all again for your persistence in not letting me settle for no usb interface out! I did have the latest version of AB, but the suggestion to delete and re-download is what got me back in the saddle, output restored and slider active in control center! So now I could rename the thread since I know how the movie ends.
