Drambo as CV to MIDI converter?

edited September 2021 in General App Discussion

Hi. Since Drambo starts with the paradigm of control voltage, would it be possible to take several CV sources from my eurorack sequencers, into my DC coupled audio interface, then convert those CV signals into MIDI to control other iOS apps? Obviously, this is common practice for MIDI to CV conversion, but looking to do the inverse, without another eurorack module, or standalone box.

Thanks.

  • Yes, this is theoretically possible, but far easier with miRack. I've done this many times and recommend it. It's a lot of fun.

Dope! Which modules do you suggest using in MI, or VCV?

I've used Quantizers like the one from the JW Modules to convert CV. In the video below, I used CV generated with 0Control to control synths on the iPad. CV is sent into Expert Sleepers ES-9 and into miRack using AUM. This should work with any DC coupled audio interface.

Has this ever been expanded in Drambo? I have an es9 and wish to modulate Auv3s from my rack via cv

You can easily modulate AUv3 parameters with Drambo CV data. Open the AUv3, touch MAP, and tweak a parameter. When you close the AUv3 GUI, the parameter appears as a knob. You can then control it from CV. So, if you can access the CV signal from your audio interface, you can modulate an AUv3 parameter. This does not require any conversion from CV to MIDI.

  • @uncledave thanks but that’s what anyone would think how it should work. But it doesn’t. Hence why I’m here. Drambo seems to only respond to envelopes and relatively faster lfos. Not what I want.
So I guess it still doesn’t work that way.

Are you certain that your audio interface inputs are DC-coupled? Conventional AC coupling will filter out the lowest frequencies, only passing faster transients. Try sending one of your inputs to a scope module and see if the DC (steady-state) level varies when the input changes slowly.

  • Oh sorry @uncledave I assumed you knew what an ES9 was. It's a DC coupled interface in Eurorack format. I use it with MiRack iOS and Mac, I use it with VCV, I use it with Ableton Live. I use their scopes for monitoring always.
Actually having an ES9 and trying to do this in Drambo, will make obvious this unique shortcoming of this setup. I guess this is why @auxmux doesn't use it in that way [from his IG account] and why he directed the OP to an alternative method [which I also follow ever since]. As he also said "this is theoretically possible, but far easier with miRack".
