AUM and “audio engine not running” (SOLVED)

What is this? Has anyone encountered this message? I have closed all other apps as the message box suggests, but without success.

One other thing is that the iPad can’t seem to connect with my Bluetooth headphones for some reason (never had an issue with them previously). I’ve tried to turn off Bluetooth also to see if that caused the problem, but that didn’t help.

  • I’m on an iPad Air 4, by the way, with a fully updated iOS.

I’ve never seen that before so maybe someone else can help, but…

    My troubleshooting go to

    1. Turn off device and turn on.

    2. Backup presets, whatever then Delete app reinstall

  • Thanks.

Yeah, I tried to reboot a few times, but it didn’t help. Apparently, I hadn’t yet updated to iOS 14.8. When I did that, it worked again. Very strange…?

When I encounter this the following strangely always works (you need to have Audiobus open, like the message in AUM Audiobus will tell you you ‘have discovered a problem with the audio engine’). Go to Audiobus, tilt/rotate you iPad away/towards (90 degrees) you a few times and press play in Audiobus (it’ll start running). Now go back to AUM and it will run again..
I know this sounds strange but it works for me (Air 2021 iOS 14.7). Read somewhere here about a problem with tilting your device and the audio engine stopping..

edit: when typing this the previous comments and your solution weren’t yet visible for me..

  • Thanks. What a weird workaround, but I’ll remember it, if I encounter the same issue in the future.

Even though AUM is working again, I now have a (kind of) similar issue with Cubasis 3. When I press play, nothing happens. All other transport buttons work fine, but the play button seems “dead”…. What the…?

Do you by chance have a magnetic case?
I recall some posts where removing the new magnetic case solved a similar problem.

Disabling microphone access for problematic apps in the system settings works reliably. Not ideal but it gets things working again.

Well, it works now. I feel like I’m going crazy 😂 but, yes, I do have a magnetic case, but never had any problems before. But, I’ll be sure to test it without the magnetic case if the problem returns.

Funny, I had exactly the same issue today. Never seen before, but did upgrade to 14.8 yesterday. I suspect something here might be at play.

To fix, I closed all apps on iPad and reopened AUM and then opened up a previous session, not the “reload last session” as I tried this first and this seemed to result in the same error.

  • I just want to mention that these iPad audio problems do not affect all devices. It seems like they were introduced by iPadOS 14.5, and they only affect devices with the latest processors, A12, A14, and M1. Some feature of those newer devices is not well handled by the current iPadOS. Since 14.5 introduced more intensive permission (privacy) checking, the problem might be related to that. When these problems were first reported, it seemed like the device thought a FaceTime call was in progress, so it needed to prevent audio processing that could interfere with privacy.

Now, the various suggested fixes (activate gyros, turn off mic access, magnetic case) all relate to the "motion" coprocessor. These input events may do something to jog the system out of whatever trap it's stuck in, even though they seem unrelated to audio processing.

  • weird thing that I got this today and googling the problem led me here! thing is this thread is a couple years old now so OS is not relevant to me. I don't use a magnetic case either

I am in the process of changing over to an audio4c to get my ipad integrated with ableton (to no success at the moment)

and this warning does come and go...because aum is having a difficult time playing with ableton link, or just playing audio at all at present! maybe that's why I keep getting this?
