  • Zombie thread. Stab in in the head.
I feel sorry for the newbie that had to scan through 3 pages to find your question.

SampleTron sounds like the original hardware which in todays terms is a seriously broken piece of kit.
Terrible looping artifacts and uninteresting sounds compared to something like Pure Platinum or SynthMaster 2.

Speaking of which, its price also seems to be a nod to the price of gear in those days.

Any long time iOS users out there? What's your impression of this one, is it worth the price? There are still no AUV3 alternatives as far as I can see, so I'm considering a purchase. Mellotronics Streetlytron Pro is only Inter-App Audio. Hm ...

I like it, I've used it in a couple of tracks as a lo-fi pad/texture, and it works really well for that purpose. It has a bit more to it than most other Mellotron apps, in that you can go for the straight vintage sound, or a more modern variant. The fact that it has ADSR controls really helps IMO.

How does it fair in competition with everything else? I have the streetlytron apps, the Mellotron apps themselves, Fingerlabs, Lo-Fi tape/piano, etc. would it offer anything more considering I have all of those?

Sampletron is a bit more versatile than any of the others, because it can do traditional Mellotron sounds, but since it also has a lot of additional controls (tape effects, ADSR, filter, and a full effects rack) it can also quickly get into lo-fi pad territory, that sounds nothing like a Mellotron but more like a unique and gritty-sounding synth.

Having said that Lo-Fi tape also covers this territory pretty nicely, so Sampletron is not necessarily essential.

Sampletron does let you import your own samples, which you can then age with tape effects etc, and this does open up some pretty interesting possibilities.

Each to their own, I guess. No rule that says you have to like the sound. But for many, it's those artefacts that go a long way to making these sounds very interesting. Comparing them to other instruments, especially something like SM2, really misses the point

IK Mellotron is the best you can get on iOS. On the desktop, the GForce Mellotron plugins are the best Mellotron emulations overall (in that they add in a lot of synth options that extend the emulation way beyond hardware Mellotrons. It helps that they work directly with Streetly Electronics for their emulations. They now have two emulations, M-Tron Pro and M-Tron Mk II, which to quote their promotional blurb:

The GForce M-Tron MkII is a celebration of the insanely rare and highly coveted original dual manual ‘trons, namely the Mellotron® MkI/MkII and Chamberlin® Musicmaster.

    https://www.gforcesoftware.com/products

But whenever I'm sketching something out on iOS, the IK Mellotron somehow always finds its way into the mix. As @richardyot states, you can make it sound vintage or modern depending on the FX processing; the tape emulations are especially impactful.

i have it on desktop and am not a fan to be honest. Like most of the IK synth stuff i find it thin and digital sounding. i much prefer Arturia's version.

The only redeeming factor is the ability to add your own samples. But honestly just use whatever sampler + chowtape which has much better controls and distortion etc.

    ^^^^ Yep this.

I do like that you can upload user samples. I didn’t realize that.

I think for now it’ll go in the same category as MixBox which is “not buying until a really crazy sale happens” haha. I love the Mellotron so I’m tempted by anything like that, but it is a bit pricey for me. I wish I could use my JamBucks to buy it.

  • I think it is on sale right now!

  • I have simpleton on Mac, not iOS and love it. I really like the sound quality of it and the included fx are excellent.

I also have the Arturia version but prefer Sampletron. There's nothing wrong with either, but Sampletron has lots of presets that I really enjoy playing. I don't need to muck about tweaking loads of stuff, I just load a preset and it's instantly playable. At least to me.

I don't go measuring stuff with oscilloscopes and don't give two shits (let alone three) about how accurate any particular emulation is. What I appreciate is when something makes it easy for me to get a sound I like with the minimum of friction, and whilst I don't like everything IK do, some of it, like Sampletron, just hits it on the nose for me. I really like it.

And I don't find it sounds thin and digital either. Quite the contrary. I think it sounds quite nice and warm. almost cuddly ;-)

Take a listen for yourselves, everyone. There’s some really cool sounds in this one. I don’t think Arturia’s is even on iOS is it?

Yeah actually I do... I have ST4 (from 2 and 3) lots of EFX, and other stuff...this synth though, is not right up there tbh. jmo :)

  • The SampleTron tape loop samples are as good as you get on any platform (they sound no 'thinner'). The bit that makes SampleTron better than any other Tron sample-set on iOS is the sheer volume of samples which covers a wide range of Tron style libraries, covering all the classics and more. And when you add the excellent tape simulations which are otherwise only available in T-Racks, it really toasts the base samples nicely with a saturation and compression flavour that's really well suited to Tron samples. The quality of the other effects is tip-top too, as they're derived from MixBox.

Only the Gforce Trons on the desktop feature a wider set of Tron samples, but much as the GForce Trons are my favourites on the desktop, their FX is nothing to write home about. This isn't a major issue on the desktop as most folk have a rich choice of bespoke FX to choose from. But on iOS, having very high quality integrated FX is a major bonus as it's oftentimes more processor/memory friendly than running an instrument and equivalent FX AU/IAA fx chain.

And as others have mentioned, the presets that IK has provided show off what the whole package can do with flying colours. I'm not in general a preset person but the SampleTron presets are a cut above.

  • I love sampletron and this thread reminds me i should be using it more. The sounds are just really up my alley.

  • Version 1.1.2 is out:

    • New sound content, “The Grunge Tapes,” tracks and presets added
    • Internal support for new sound content, “The Grunge Tapes"
    • Imported samples now autofill to cover notes between and around root keys
    • Fixed a bug where velocity was not recalling in plug-in instance
  • I see Sampletron is on sale for 40 bucks and has new sounds added. My update keeps failing though (perhaps due to the fact this is a monstrous 4gb. Anyone come across this problem? Any solution? It gets about 3rd of the wwy through before i get some kind of 'update failed' message

I just can't use this app at that size. Not even for free.

I had no problems downloading the update yesterday 😊

It went through OK for me (UK), but that was yesterday.

Yeah, I know the iOS versions of the IK romplers are already a cut down version of the desktop software but it would be nice to have the option of an even smaller sample set with fewer velocity layers etc for sketching with and then have the option to render the final version on one of the full fat installs.

In my last project I just picked my set of instruments on the desktop and converted them to very small SF3 soundfonts for sketching on the iPad inside KQ Sampei. At the end I did the final mix on the desktop using the original instruments.

Lucky you, it has failed on me about 5 times - both on wifi and 4g

Odd. No problem downloading for me (US).

The sample import function works properly now which is awesome! I haven’t gone through all the Grunge Tape presets yet but it’s pretty cool that IK keeps adding to this app.

Finally downloaded for me. Some cool sounds in the new grunge ones. A lot more presets than I was expecting. Will do demo(s) /giveaway. The app is roughly half price at the minute too 👍

  • Welp I finally made the jump and wow I love it so far. The Mellotron is my favorite keyboard instrument and this is the peak of that on iOS and desktop. Sounds fantastic.

  • Looks like SampleTron for desktop is again on sale for just under $40 right now. 8 GB of samples is just not for me anymore (I'm trying to only buy non-sampled instruments and plugins), but this might be just the thing for others.

I love Sampletron. The Mellotron is one of my favorite instruments ever and since it’s a sample based instrument from the start, it makes sense it there wouldn’t be a physically modeled version so this is really the only way to get those sounds.

I’m hoping they’ll put MixBox on sale soon.
