Weirdo drum machine apps [not typical 808, 909 emulations etc]

Looking for something weird. Been watching pulsar 23 videos but I am absolutely never gonna spend almost 2 grand on a drum machine. Anything weird on IOS? Don’t really have any drum machine apps. Am a sampler mostly using BM3 and Drambo but I’m looking for something a bit more prebuilt to sample. AU only, cheers

  • Not sure if it fits the bill, but Ruismaker FM definitely deviates from the traditional 808/909 emulations in terms of sound, while retaining the simple and focused UI of the original Ruismaker. Hammerhead's Drumsynth can also get pretty weird.

    Fractal Bits!!

Nice that’s kind of getting there. Does much come out on its low end? Looking for that industrial ominous bass-iness that comes out of soma gear. Lyra has it too. analog bass for lack of a better word. Not really a believer of analog juju or anything. Just maybe something with sub oscs. There’s definitely a harsh glitchy element to the sound I’m thinking of. Again ruismaker seems not much low end from the demo I just saw but that may just be the demo. Going for more death grips and less chiptune. May have to just layer samples failing all else

    Seekbeats

Or the ultra-light precursor to it (free), tweakybeat:

Edit: Sorry... missed the AU comment. But i'll keep these here as reference
I was gonna recommend ElasticDrums too

Fractal bits can be a bit light on the low-end. Probably not what you're looking for. But hey, it's $2. You'll get back your investment in entertainment value within the first 20 minutes.

I never mind things not being AU only, so i'm checking on my device which ones are...

    Axon 2
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/axon-2/id1289090729

Drambo and Hammerhead (be sure to use the synth functions besides the sampling part, for drambo, i'm sure you can find some neat patches on Patchstorage)
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/drambo/id1469365718
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hammerhead-rhythm-station/id1568699989

GR-16 is an awesome groovebox that could be tweaked for you needs
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/groove-rider-gr-16/id1318750537

and of course, Fractal Bits that wim already mentioned
edit: And you could patch some crazy stuff in MiRack or Sunvox too, but it seems it's not what you would dig as of now)

Axon 2 can make some cool sounds, but the sequencer gets kind of annoying after a while. I like sequencing it like a normal drum machine.

  • I love skiid. Glitchy as hell with a good randomiser

Got it, I think you're right, maybe Ruismaker Noir? It can get have a ton of low end, though I'm not sure if the demos in the homepage showcase that. Not trying to push you to Bram Bos apps btw, just a happy user ;)

  • Ruismaker Noir is pretty interesting and odd. It’s very flexible and a great sample factory. Can get a lot of low end if you want, but can also drop the lows if you want.

Ah yeah... You got a point
I do use it sometimes with Xequence and Octachron, but It has to be standalone

Drambo is great for building weird percussion, its probably my favorite thing to do with it!

I find the envelopes to be a bit clicky at times, so I created a wrapper around SunVox for a smoother percussion envelope https://patchstorage.com/sunvox-adsr-wrapper/

I've also built a hihat synth I think is pretty rad https://patchstorage.com/hatᴱ/ . It's heavy though, probably best to run only once instance. I'm going to make it a bit more efficient at some point soon.

I'm looking forward to the eventual release of some of the Elastic Drum engines as AUv3. Those are awesome.

Yeah, SKIIID is the weirdest drum machine on iOS, one of my favorite tools for sound design and creating loops. Its randomization button is bananas, being also a powerful tool for ambient music thanks to its drone mode.

  • Fractal bits is good - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fractal-bits/id1482725385 plenty of strange noises out of that one

  • and drumlab (formerly DM2) https://apps.apple.com/app/drumlab/id1523182272 has a lot of odd noise generation potential as well - I just wish that the dev would either make the app fit on my ipad pro 11" screen properly or change the sidebars to something other than that horrible Magenta colour!

  • and Mersenne is designed to be a "tuned percussion" synth so you can get some great clangs and dings out of that one https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mersenne-auv3-plugin-synth/id1084197093

  • save your money and get the pulsar!! anything soma makes is legend quality. I have their pipe and their lyra 8. two of my favorite tools ever. highly recommend.

  • Use any standard samples, and then destroy them with fx like Koala FX or Bitcrushers.

No, you don't understand. DrumLab is AudioBus and IAA only.

The original poster of this thread was looking for a drum machine that supported AUv3.

    Ok.. my bad..

  • TweakyBeat
    Skiid
    Fractal bits

Drum Computer is capable of almost anything, has lots of presets, and with sample loading

FAC Drumkit is an interesting drum synth with sample loading.

Triq Traq not just drums, or TriqTraq LE.

Ruismakerfm- can create or randomize all kinds of odd blings, bongs, bleeps, boops, etc.

    Same goes for…
Ruismaker Noir - random sound creation

Hammerhead with its internal drum Synth and randomness. Random sound creation

Or something like Web Audio Player, Radio AU, Tube AU, where you can find so many sounds and use them.

  • As soon as I watched this I let @brambos know how much it sounded like Ruismaker Noir.

  • Elastic Drums. Pretty unique drum/synth engine.

    And all mentioned before.

Add replicant and/turnado to the mix

  • Just use any old synth or sampler that makes weird noise and sequence it with the drum module in Rozetta.

I wish Drum Lab was AUv3.
