Quaalude And Fugue / Flowtones

Flowtones Hybrid Organ plus BeatHawk Total Bass and Ravenscroft 275. I must confess I sped this one up 2x. Impossible (for me) to improvise two lines at 160bpm. Once again, IMO, Flowtones shows it’s crisp interpretation of an organ patch.

  • Bumping this. Worth a listen.

  • I am always late to the listening party and will listen to this later along with the F#£&*()g version…
It still strikes me that the titles of posts are almost the most important thing in getting the initial views and even getting people to press play and then to comment. There’s a degree thesis to be done on this one.
Now, after googling, at least I know that the Quaalude aren’t a race of aliens in Dr Who.

  • I think you finished recording before the Quaaludes could kick in.

I do like it when you throw in the odd "blue" note due to ingrained patterns to play blues licks. It only happens 2-3 times but it wakes me up every time as being "Beyond Bach".

Bach was pretty strictly Major or Minor in his melodic approach... but he was a master of modulation to avoid sounding like a hack.

The size and quality of his catalogue is as astonishing as his ability to
create children ("fathered 20 children over his lifetime").

He was a true master of his organ.

Is this a good time to mention what "Jazz" meant at it's inception?

I see what you did there 🥸

I’m gonna have to try this trick @LinearLineman doubling up on the bpms!

    Neato!

  • I enjoyed listening to this. I think I would have preferred that you not mention the tempo manipulations as that probably distracted me from the performance, which was impeccable, I might add. I have used this technique myself, with mixed results. You pulled it off quite convincingly. It sounded very natural and in-the-moment. I also listened to the Fuggin version. Personally, I liked the original a bit more, but I can't say exactly why. When it comes to spontaneous improvisation, I think the original, imperfect as it may be, contains the inspiration and character that makes a performance special. I'm probably not the best person to comment on improvisation, since most of my stuff tends to be rather structured. I chose to post on this version only as the other one seemed to have a bit too much drama for me. I think there is a popular acronym TL/DNR. In any case, it was a fine performance that I enjoyed very much. Nice work!

Also, I love the title! Great play on words. Made me laugh.

@McD, yes, the quirky blue notes find their way , don’t they! I’m glad they show up.
Thanks @Edward_Alexander. Yes, messing with the bpm is fun and instructive. You just have to maintain all midi tracks, no audio.

@Paulieworld, that’s an interesting and accurate comment re the original instrument choice. I used the Flowtones hybrid organ patch as the inspiration for the improvisation. So, it probably wouldn’t have happened if I had been playing a piano app. I changed to the piano cause I thought the organ did not have the appeal. The piano version is more “beautiful “ in a traditional way, I think.

As to the “drama” in the other thread…. I think the promotion of creative work on the forum needs regular tending. Creations are like a wildflower in this tech garden. It doesn’t belong, yet it adds. IMO, needed color. It is a particular goal of all the technology. An end result. That thread has over 600 hits, I think, and almost 200 listens. I wouldn’t do it for any old track, but this was a special one for me. If artists want some attention they can’t just stand in the corner and hope someone will notice them. That’s why I did it. Thanks very much for the listens and affirmation. 🙏🏻
