RIP Dr. Lonnie Smith

One of the last old-school Hammond organ greats passed away today - Dr. Lonnie Smith. For those who need some backstory, look here:

I got to meet Dr. Lonnie briefly at a Steve Smith (drummer for Journey, Vital Information, etc.) drum clinic back in 2000. Very kind man, and of course an incredible musician and organist.

God bless the Good Doctor, and here's hoping he's up there joining the incredible jam in the sky.

  • Oh man that’s sad to hear, Davey.

I spent many a wonderful evening in Ft. Lauderdale watching him at O’Hara’s Pub — where he led the house band.

Most of the clientele went there to drink and had no idea they were witness to a musician legend.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Oh boy. What a tremendous musician.
Possibly the only jazz organ player from the 60s who was still putting out quality material over 50 years later.
I particularly love his playing on the early George Benson stuff and his superb album from only a few years back called ‘Evolution’.

  • So sad. He's something of a cult hero here in the UK, especially in the jazz scene (Gilles Petersen has been one of his greatest supporters over the years).

I have a permanent mental picture of his cameo appearances in Treme. Loved the way Treme paid respect to the real musicians that served as an inspiration to the fictional musicians in the show.

  • Lonnie Liston Smith was and always will be legendary.

I saw him perform here in London in 90’s.
It was a really lovely day.

    Awesome.

    RIP

    Dr. Lonnie Liston Smith.

  • Another amazing legend, gone. ☹️ Tonight I'm gonna binge his music on Spotify in remembrance.

Lonnie Liston Smith and Dr. Lonnie Smith were different people, but it is very easy to confuse them and I have made that mistake myself in the past.

    Thank you for the correction.

    Easily done.

    The respect is the same.

For sure - that have the same name, both play keys, play VERY similar music during the same era, both had cool beards and wore cool headgear - I mixed them up for years without knowing the difference.

    😉👍

  • I didn’t know there was Lonnie Liston Smith and a Lonnie Smith.
I’ve been listening to the both of them as one Artist for decades.

Except for seeing Lonnie Liston Smith live here
in London I had only ever listened to them.

    Thank you. 🙏🏾

  • Oh man, Expansions is one of the maot psychedelic, beautiful and mind-expanding tracks for me. That whole album has strong and very positive connections for me with a period of life in my 20s where I was discovering all this incredible black soul/jazz/funk music. RIP Lonnie, what a legend.

Expansions is by Lonnie Liston Smith, not Dr Lonnie Smith. Easily confused though!

Ah damn, thanks for the correction lol. Now I'll have to look and see if the other Lonnie is still around 😂

  • Yup, and looks like I'm probably not the only one who was lamenting his passing 😂
