airdropping to Files not working on my iPad (but does on my phone)
Hoping someone here has an answer. I'm trying to airdrop a file from my iMac to a specific folder in "files" on my iPad, but it isn't working. When I airDrop to "files" on my iPhone it lets me choose what folder I would like the airdropped file to be deposited in, and works as expected. However when I airdrop to my iPad and select "files" from the list, the interaction ends there.... I do not get to select a folder, nor are there any warnings or error messages. If I then search on the file name it can't be found anywhere. So weird. Any ideas? Airdrop from my iPad to my iMac and iPhone works fine. Argh! ;P Thanks in advance!

Lets get this one out of the way first: Have you tried rebooting your iPad?
I did power down and restart, and then tried again (and failed). Not sure technically if power-down and restart = "reboot". (After googling it seems it is)
OK then what kind of file is it? Maybe there's some iOS file-type restriction. Can you transfer a different file, like a text file or something? oh wait, you said it works on the phone. That probably isn't it.
What version of iOS on the iPad?
14.7.1
Whoa.... actually I can airdrop a text file to my iPad and then the Files app lets me choose where to import it to! what the heck? So maybe file type does matter? So weird. Because same file shares fine to my phone.
ugh. nevermind and thank you Wim! It seems I can airdrop it to AudioShare and then it shows up in my AudioShare Files folder. So I'll just use that as a workaround.
But man that Files app is rough. I have my file listed on screen in the AudioShare folder and when I just type it's name in the search bar (right there just above it) it is not even found. nor does it find it when I have "on my iPad" selected and search on the name. sigh I do not understand. I try to do the simplest tests (for sanity) and sometimes these fail.
The files app has been improved in iOS 15, so updating might improve things.
Just sayin', the Files app isn't really an "app" at all. It's just a wrapper for a bunch of interfaces provided by other apps. The sidebar items are "File Provider Extensions". On my iPad is also a File Provider; it relies on the apps for what it displays/accesses. So, Search needs to be correctly supported by those components for the thing to work as expected. I just tried a couple of searches, and both worked with only the start of the name. Actually not bad.
@uncledave Thanks for the explanation. Sounds like a mess. :P Wish it was as easy as working with files on desktops. Search seems ok, but the fact that it wouldn't pull up that one for me really undermines my faith. It pulled up all sorts of appropriate stuff, just not the glaringly obvious one that was right there on screen when I began typing in the search bar.
@michael_m That's good to hear. I'm going to probably wait a little while. Stuff is generally working for me right now and pretty soon I'll be laid up in bed for a couple weeks, so I don't want my lovely iPad unstable and leaving me high and dry. But after that will start monitoring the ios 15 threads. Thanks!
Is Files on iOS 15 now even remotely (haha) capable of mounting SMB shares in a reliable manner, or does it still give useless error messages or freeze 99% of the time when you try to mount, access, or unmount one? Oh and does it now suggest sensible credentials in the "Connect to server" "Recent Servers" list, or is it still being populated with usernames I've last used 10 years ago? 🤪 (sorry had to!)
