Song Of The Month Club - October 2021

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine

  • My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

Can you help me out here
    Can you help me find
Would you help me see here
Or would you leave me blind?
Can you help me find a reason
I want some peace of mind
If you and I are beaten
    There’s nothing left to find

    Help
    I’m gonna lose my mind
I fell out of my skin for you
I pulled you in my heart
I wept a thousand tears for you
    And you ripped me apart

I can’t look into my own eyes
I can’t see what others see
    Hidden from my own sight
My faults are unknown to me

Can you help me see what you see?
    Reveal the mystery
    I wanted to see clearly
But it’s all hidden from me

    Help
    I’m gonna lose my mind
I fell out of my skin for you
I pulled you in my heart
I wept a thousand tears for you
    And you ripped me apart

  • This is an older one. I used Alchemy Mobile (layered with one or two other synth apps) to create the music. And I used Auria Pro to record it.

    It’s titled Distant Memories.

  • @richardyot what type of fx are you using on the vocal chain?

    Verse FX chain (MixBox):

    Chorus FX chain:

And Pro-R on a send for both:

All the vocals are double-tracked, and in the chorus there is also a double-tracked low harmony part (sung a third lower) panned left and right.

  • @richardyot This is easily the best I’ve heard of your stuff. Your vocal delivery is really suited to frosty, mysterious material. Sounds like late-80s The Church.

Thanks - I love The Church. Under The Milky Way is one of the best songs of the 80s.

  • @richardyot you are a PRO!

    Are you using AURIA?
On which iPad? I have an old 10" and starting to thing for a PRO 11" or 12.9"...

Really nice the way you play the vocal melodies on the guitar. The guitar playing is excellent! And each vocalist has a different tone, one track for Elton and a different one for Dua Lipa.

You nailed it IMO, great job.

Yes I always do the final mixes in Auria, but I usually compose and arrange elsewhere, most often in GarageBand but also sometimes in NS2 or Gadget. Then I export the stems to mix in Auria which has a better mixer than the other apps.

I use a 2017 10.5 iPad Pro, it's still working OK for me.

  • as someone said earlier, more of an appetizer (than a fully developed song

  • @richardyot i really like the late eighties indie/wave thing you got going (and your production/mixing), for me - as with your september song - a little blemish/saturation/glitch here and there and maybe a few more bpm would make it 'catch me' more

@DavidEnglish strange: it is after reading the title that your song came alive for me. it set a context that made me appreciate it and think i understood, the imagery in the video didn't support that idea (distant memories) for me (as maybe old family footage would have)

@pexfra : it's the guitar sounds/playing that are able to fully carry your version for me

There's a nice lo-fi vibe in the instruments, and the vocal is great (is it from a sample pack?) and the track is well arranged. The section at the end is the best bit, it segways into something quite different and surprised me in a good way.

Thank you! The first 'part' is is almost all samples (blocswave and vocal is indeed a black octopus pack), in the 'different part' a Grooverider wavetable synth and bass come in..

Very relaxing. I listen to a lot of ambient music while working and this ticks the right boxes for me, it's got just the right amount of movement and melody and flows beautifully. It's an evolving and immersive piece.

We are late to the party this month. We were in Spain for most of September without guitars so we are playing catch up. A complete change of pace from us, back to a more country vibe. Garageband into Grand Finale, Nembrini acoustic amp with some pad sounds from the latest Garageband sound pack.

Hehl Final Version of last month track

The arrangement is excellent, with the guitar and piano interweaving beautifully. I really like the sparse piano parts, they're very effective. the whole song is constructed very well, with nice instrumental breaks between the vocal sections, and that little break after the first refrain is great.

The vocal melody is very good, and I like the melancholy feel of the voice. The song could maybe be a minute shorter, but having said that I'm not sure what I would cut out if I was in the producer's chair :)

I loved this. Great intro and chorus as usual. Strong production and vocal sound with some really interesting sounds and textures throughout. My only criticism is that from an arrangement point of view I would have refrained the chorus at the end rather than fading out with the instrumental section.

Nice evolving ambient piece with some nice pad sounds. My problem with sort of music is I keep waiting for the melody to kick in. They all seem like a long introduction rather then a completed piece.

Nice. It is great to hear some good guitar playing on here.

Great use of the various samples at the start. I’m not sure about the transition to the synth sounds towards the end.

Nice rhythm with lots going on. It got a bit messy for me with various airy sounds clashing rather then complimenting each other.

Thanks Richard. This is already the radio edit. The original version had a third verse and ran till nearly 6 minutes 😀

I like the main delayed chord motif, it's hypnotic and interesting. I think the arrangement could do with some more variety though, because it's quite long but not really varied enough, so by the end it feels a bit one-note-ish. Maybe a different section with some different musical ideas, and more varied background textures for variety. The vocal whoop/cry samle was good - more stuff like this would certainly help.

  • @orchardman I really like the dialogue/interplay between guitar, vocals and piano, I also think the songs is in the end maybe a bit too long (or needs another variation?)

@Overdosed_Ape I like the trancy vibe (that once you get into it, it can go on and on), for me some sounds/the mix may be a little more agessive/distorted sometimes
