AB forum suggestions

edited March 2013 in General App Discussion

Got a few suggestions for the forum here. None of it is important by any means but just a few things for a fuller experience. Since the forum is doing so well I think upgrading it a little wouldn't be a bad idea.

-Soundcloud link on profile that shows next to the persons name when they post.
-Polls
- +1 or "like" for posts and comments
-signature area

Anyone else think of anything post it here!

Thanks :-)

  • Not sure Vanilla supports any of this stuff - it's decidedly minimal. If it does and enough people want it I'll volunteer to help make it happen so @sebastian and @michael can focus their coding energy on the app!

  • It may not be in the original code but I'm sure they can edit it in there fairly easily. Most of it is semi-simple DB queries. I too could offer to make this happen but I'm sure Sebastian and Michael don't want me poking around the inner workings of their site. :-)

  • Not necessarily that simple. If vanilla doesn't have hooks for plugins it means hacking the main distro and that means a headache every time an update comes out.

  • Fair enough. I know Audulus forum is vanilla and support uploads so I was kind of basing it off that working. I took a look at their site and I think most of these changes should be easy using plugins. Just up to Sebastian and Micheal if they want to add things or not. Also if needed be I'm sure some of us could author some custom plugins to get things done. :-)

  • A new discussion category called "Outside", so that anyone who wants to fight can take it "Outside". ;)

  • I don't think we should hack stuff like this into Vanilla. If things like signatures, voting, etc. are really absolutely necessary at some point, we're going to have to switch the forum software.

But currently we neither have the time to do this, nor do I think letting someone else implement it would be wise. I'm going to chat with Mike about this, maybe he sees it differently.

  • @Sebastian Cool. I kind of thought you'd prefer to keep it simple. :-)

if you do decide, everything but the soundcloud is available from the vanilla site

    polls: http://vanillaforums.org/addon/poll-plugin
    signatures: http://vanillaforums.org/addon/signatures-plugin
    +1: http://vanillaforums.org/addon/kudos-plugin
    like button: http://vanillaforums.org/addon/liked-plugin
    embed soundcloud: http://vanillaforums.org/addon/mediator-plugin

there is a lot more there too but I feel these are the ones that would bennefit most.

  • That's awesome. I didn't know there were plugins for Vanilla.
Putting that on our To-Do list then...

  • Sweet! :-))

  • Done and done - very sorry about the delay.

  • Wow that's really cool! I have a whole lot of plus one-ing to do! lol Thank you @Michael!

    Word up!

  • Ungh... now we've got those

Sent from my Magic Device using this App that's kind of neat

    Signatures. sigh

  • @Sebastian Heh. I like signatures but those ones are a little silly. Kind of reminds me of IRC when people would advertise what they are using to view the channel. :-)

  • @JMSexton:

    Thanks for removing that! <3
