Small-ish speakers—iLoud MTM, Genelec?

Another speaker recommendation thread! But maybe with a twist.

I just sold my beloved Yamaha HS8s because they’re just too big and heavy. I replaced them with a pair of iLoud MTMs, which I have tried before, and which are the equal of the HS8s. I did extensive listening tests, and while they have different strengths, neither is overall better IMO.

But these MTMs have a high-pitched whine. It’s a known problem, and IK is arranging a return.

One thing I liked about the HS8s was their reliability. I wondered if I might stretch to a pair of Genelec 8030s instead?

They’re bigger than the MTMs, and double the weight (5kg vs 2.5kg each), but perhaps more reliable long-term?

The Genelecs are also quite a lot more expensive, and I’m not a pro.

Thoughts?

Not answering your question but I have a pair of Presonus Eris 3.5 which I am very happy with. They are substantially cheaper than either of the above so may not be ‘pro’ enough for you. I also haven’t directly compared them with anything else and am by no means a monitor aficionado.

  • This is another fairly subjective matter...

IK - good size, flexible configurations, impressive sound for many tasks but I couldn’t disregard the AI - to me it was way too obvious, audible. Like listening to a compressor working all the time on master ch. pulled in just a little too much for my taste. Convincing for dance music but on acoustic sources it made more damage than good.
Genelec - in this size it was the most disappointing, you’re paying for the brand but sound is missing completely, to my surprise they were the first I ruled out.
ADAM A3X - I really like the neutral sound but it definitely needs the sub to cover all applications - they aren’t cheap either and with the sub they’re no longer mobile.
Presonus - I was surprised how much I liked them, not the most neutral but overall seemed like a good compromise.
So my takeaway was that there was no overall good solution if size/mobility is a concern. You ‘pay’ somewhere - sound vs size. Though for specific tasks one may work out better than the other.

  • While I do like the Genelecs, I've got me a a pair Adam A5X instead. Had planned to add the sub later but in use, I've never felt the need to add a sub at all. For the size, they're great.
I'm sure there are other excellent monitors out there for even less money but it may be hard to find a shop nearby for doing listening tests of a good choice of different monitors.

  • Good recommendations all. I most often hear Genelecs in art exhibition spaces, and I've always been impressed. Not sure what size they are though.

I'm regretting selling those HS8s more and more, but on the other hand, they went for a reason, and that reason hasn't changed.

  • I saw this YouTuber using it and I was like what is that thing… he was pitching loops and remixing a song in on video and just using as a monitor in another. Goes by Khordmaster.

    Me too.

Do you have to carry them around frequently?
The Adam T5V seem to be outstanding for the price btw.

  • I have Eve audio sc203 speakers. They are super small (for monitors) super versatile, amazing sound but low end sucks obvs in under 5” speaker. And they are not cheap. They have a high quality built in interface you can connect your iPad directly via USB. Also passive radiator design so no bass port.

They are a bit small though really so I’m looking at saving up for 5” version.
Similar style to Adam monitors but I prefer this brand more.

I almost got genelecs but found a good deal on the Eve Audios

It’s worth it to spend a bit on some quality speakers, and room treatment! Glad I’m the end I didnt go with cheaper alternatives.

  • What about the smaller offerings from Genelec like the 8010A and 8020D?

I've got a pair of JBL 308Ps which are fine right now but I've always wondered what the sub would be for? Don't get me wrong, I have one for my music but I'm sure that most people don't. It's for mixing, right? What would you be missing if it wasn't there? Please don't say something about Hz. I'm just trying to ensure that I don't buy one tbh.

No, it’s that my new sit/stand desk tilts with the weight, and I will be moving into a smaller place in the near future. That, and I always felt they were just too big, visually — I don’t have a dedicated music room.

    LOL!

  • Of course, it would probably have been cheaper to just buy a sturdier desk...

How is the MTM high pitched whine reproducible? I got the MTMs last December and haven’t used them enough to notice, wondering if mine have the same issue. There are firmware updates for the MTMs. I wonder if the whine is present in all versions of MTMs…

  • @JoyceRoadStudios It’s a known issue, and does’t affect all units. It’s a fault in the power supply, I believe. They have the usual white noise hiss that you can hear from most active speakers from close up, but then a nasty whine on top.

How do you like the MTMs?

I don’t have a complete opinion yet, because I haven’t used the ARC mic calibration yet. I got them new in December because the iLoud micros I ordered got lost in the mail and were out of stock, so I was compensated with a steeply discounted pair of MTMs. I have the carrying case for them, and while they’re bigger than the micros, they are extremely portable with the case, the size of a small computer bag with all cables comes in around 13lbs and I put them in my luggage.

I’ve only mixed and referenced two daw projects on them so far and they sound good, I set the dsp flat on the back. Motu m4 monitor outs. I really like the representation in the bass and their overall color.

Playing commercial music through them sounds great, with some of my favorite songs I heard things in the low frequencies I’ve never heard before. I can’t comment on their flatness as I’m not a monitor expert. But they do sound good and revelatory. For a mobile studio they’re a good fit. I’m weary of the dsp and IK buggyness doing more harm than good with this otherwise good product.

Playing amp sims through them, it sounds just ok at medium volume, but that’s normal and studio monitors aren’t intended for blasting guitar sims anyway.

  • @JoyceRoadStudios

    Thanks for the thoughts.

I had a pair of MTMs a year or two back, and I did an extensive comparison with my HS8s then. I found that the 3d image of the iLouds was amazing, and the overall sound was as good as the Yamahas, just different. The bass was most surprising—it really didn’t lack for much.

I’ve been playing with this set before I send them back. The calibration is impressive, but I have them set flat now, because one speaker won’t save the calibration through a restart.

If it was just down to the sound, I would probably keep them. But the fact that the power-supply whine is apparently common, and now the non-saved ARC profile—it’s hard to spend €800 on a pair of speakers with like that.

I ordered some Genelecs, but they’re out of stock everywhere, so I will probably be sending these back before they even ship. A shame, as a comparison would be useful.

  • My 2 cents:
Im interested in buy Mixcube active, not from Behringer but from avantone.
Do you know if it is worth?

  • Another user of Adam A3X. Stunning little things. Tempted to upgrade to the 5X for extra bottom end.
