Essential Synths / Pad, Pluck And Blare

This, my 40th iOS album, is a collection of my favorite synth-centric tracks. Below I list the synths I used for each piece. In addition, the synths are often supported by strings and chorus, mostly garnered from Module Pro and PureSynthPlatinum. Surprisingly, there is not a single piano part in these, though, in its entirety, it was improvised on a digital keyboard.

Many thanks to @Spidericemidas for the excellent sound designs used throughout several of these tracks. Of course there are many great iOS synths not represented here, but if I had to make due on a deserted island these would certainly suffice.

hope you will enjoy this recap of past musical deeds. Headphones requested for best results.

  • What a great collection of synth-abilities. I'm left synth-less by these aural worlds.

A lovely collection of synth scapes and explorations that go well together, Mike.

Love the cover image, totally smoking! Very 70s! What a looker! You haven’t changed a bit! 😁

  • I'll bet the picture is from 1973.

  • Damn - that's one sexy man right there! 😘

  • 40th, dang man, I need to get rolling here. Congratulations, digging it too.

You basing that on the glasses frame?

  • You’re killin’ it, LL!

More on the age of the venerable Lineman today and guessing his age in the photo.
He and I are a year apart.

  • Thanks @McD @Spidericemidas @Daveypoo @Poppadocrock @NeuM. Your listening is much appreciated.

The photo was probably taken in 1972, age 24. The John Lennon glasses… mostly cause of the wire temples which hooked around my ears, but it was, indeed, of the era. At the time I was homeless, sleeping under the vinyl piano cover of my Sohmer grand, in the loft of a photographer friend where my band rehearsed. I was arrogant, smug and cynical… which can be seen in the photo, I think. I never thought I was particularly good looking at the time. Is that a smirk on my face?

The photographer friend had a loft? Tell us more about this person. Was this one of his/her photographs? A loft large enough to hold a grand in NYC?

I was arrogant, smug and cynical…

Good traits for some aspiring to make it in the arts. Attitude can sustain during the start up years. I have some clues where this story goes and how you eventually pay the rent and run a business. All before discovering your mentor. I'm sure many here took a shot at a carer in the arts and had to find a sustaining day job.

@McD, the photographer was Jeff Smith, a wonderful industrial photographer, still at work. You can google him. I cropped from this picture shot on the roof of the penthouse loft Jeff occupied in the 70s.

I started studying with Connie Crothers at 25 while I was delivering the Village Voice once a week for sustenance.

It’s a great picture! I really dig that 70s look!

  • Wow. There are dozens of "Jeff Smith Photographer" and somewhat less for "Jeff Smith Industrial Photographer". Any extra details? Brooklyn? Staten Island? Manhatten? NJ?

  • That photo is just fascinating - I keep coming back to look at it.. There are a million stories in there - each of your expressions, the era, the B&W, the clothes. The way she's gazing at you with such affection, your arrogant smirk, the other gentleman's windswept joy... it's fantastic to look at and it just sucks you in.

I'm re-reading a book by Clive Barker called Weaveworld and it's about an entire world woven into an infinitely intricate Persian-style carpet. I feel similarly when I look at this picture - like I could step into that world and be a part of that particular party.

  • @DaveMagoo, @McD yes, the era, the downtown NYC industrial neighborhood, the happiness, the smirk. Here’s another for your delectation…

  • @McD, no, he wasn’t. He’s a wonderful fellow and was hugely generous to me in the 70s.

  • Diggin the album, the music, the stories, and the photos!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Thanks @Edward_Alexander. Glad you’re enjoying it.

  • Were the 2 pictures shown here "band promo" material?

  • @McD, yeah, band pr.

What instruments were involved and who played what?

  • @McD, girl singer, bass player. and I was playing a Hammond B3 plus piano. We added a long haired drummer later.

The 2nd shot is less inspired but definitely gives off the band promo vibe. Got any recordings of that lineup? Was the band good? What was your name?

I'd love to hear that record...

  • @Daveypoo, there were reel to reel recordings, now lost. The band was okay. Just played my original material… like Naked Traveller.

Sorry to derail the thread from it's initial intent, my friend. You know we wouldn't ask if you weren't so brilliant - and besides, your backstory is infinitely fascinating so it begs the questions. Any band with you rockin' a Hammond has got my ears perked up at the mere idea.

Damn shame those were lost. I've always been the archivist in every band I've been in, so I've got hours and hours of terrible recordings no one will ever care about.
