advice for ipadmini

Hi,

I was thinking of getting a used ipadmini for use with Atom2, Aum, Koala Sampler, controller apps for the digitone and analog four, layr, Synthscaper or Soundscaper apps, Nave, Animoog, Laplace.

After searching for the minimum requirement for most apps are ios 10 and highest at ios 12. I read that the ipad mini 2 can be upgraded to ios 12.

Actually my main intent is to use it as a controller for the elektrons and eventually for the Blofeld and to record midi sequences into Atom2 for trigger playback and definitely Koala for sampling and playback. Maybe run 1 or 2 synths like Nave or Animoog or LayR

Is anyone using some of the apps mentioned on their ipadmini 2?
I like to hear some of your advice or any issue you have.

best!

  • Get the newest one you can. Once apps start dropping support for older versions, you’re stuck.

Other advice is to try one before you buy, to make sure it’s not laggy and slow. I still have an old 1st-gen mini around, and it’s dog slow. Never should have done that final iOS upgrade. I use it solely as a bluetooth midi controller for and Eventide H9 pedal.

  • i have a couple iPad mini 2's running iOS 12. it performs terribly. The UI is pretty laggy.

That being said, look at the refurb page of apple. These come with a 1 year warranty and still eligible for AppleCare. The only real difference is they come in a brown cardboard box instead of the white one with the picture on the box. I have a few mini 5's and a mini6, and there's no performance difference between the 2. If it wasn't for usb-c, i wouldn't have upgraded....

  • I'd say the minimum iPad Mini you should be looking at is an iPad Mini 4. This model will be a little future proof too. Depending on the spec, these tend to sell for between £150-250 on UK eBay.

  • yes, same here, I've a 1st gen ipadmini too, only use it to watch videos and read pdfs or manuals.
there seems to be a sharp jump in cores from mini4 to mini5. from dual to hexa.
Maybe I sell my ipad 2018 for n mini 2020.
    ok thanks for the advice!

I’ll share my perspective, as I was in a similar thought process in late 2020/early 2021.

If you already have a 2018 iPad, you already have a good iPad to use for what you need. I personally wouldn’t sell it, but would save for a larger iPad with USB-C. Then you can use the USB-C one as your main one, and the current 2018 as your project iPad.

Remember, with the older iPad Mini, you still need the Lightning connectors, and they’re not that small compared to your base iPad.

The new iPad Mini with USB-C port is cool, don’t get me wrong. But for your use case, you’re making a big trade off for the USB-C port. Lack of a headphone jack.

  • I will counter the above saying losing the headphone jack wasn't that big of a deal considering the trade off with usb-c: that i can now leave the house with a controller or two, and not have to be bothered with the cck+hub+poweradapter/battery pack.

But @seonnthaproducer is correct. Your 2018 is more than capable, and has a better processor than a mini4, which is the most important part. Hold on to it, and wait. The next iPad you buy should be new, new, new.
