Cubasis 3 finger gestures are frustrating
Is it just me or are the finger gestures in Cubasis 3 very inconsistent and frustrating? For example, I tap a clip to select it. Now I want to drag it a few bars to the right, but wait, it's dragging the whole screen even though I have the clip selected! Now, I want to resize a MIDI note. I'm dragging at the right edge where it shows the resize icon, but wait, it's moving the note instead! Is there some secret to nailing these gestures every time or is it just hit and miss?
I prefer the editing in apps like Xequence 2, where the dragging and resizing is abstracted from the actual editing area. I don't know why all DAWs don't have this feature.
Thanks,

For all gestures in arrangement view, it’s best to use a higher zoom level as it helps to select properly clip and clip handles. Clip gestures zones must be selected with precision, so higher zoom level helps a lot.
Also and more importantly, clip must be holded in its lower part in the center to be moved properly. If you hold it in its middle height whole arrangement screen will move instead.
Cubasis 3 clips gestures can be inconsistent at times, but works well for me here most of the time with some practice on 7 Plus and 11 M1. I admit some other iOS DAWS are more easy and fluid to use here, but it’s not that bad.
Same zoom tip can be applied to notes, except that you even have a better tool here: modifying buttons. Hold one on those button on the left (velocity, lenght…) and drag one (or a selection) of note(s) in the proper direction. You can place your finger anywhere on the screen to drag the value. It’s much more easier and works perfectly!!
@Janosax I really appreciate your quick response! These are very useful tips. Thanks!
Somehow I wish @LFS and the Cubasis team would get 'inspired' by the midi editors in NS2, Xequence, BM3 or even Gadget..
..they are honestly way, way more 'touch oriented' that what Cubasis 3 provides at the moment.
One thing I personally find annoying with the select tool in the piano roll editor is that if I use it to move one note I manually have to deselect the previous note before I can move the next one this as the select tool adds/removes from the selection.
Another the 'velocity bars' at the bottom of the screen do not respect the note selection.
So if I want to draw a 'velocity ramp' using the vertical lines at the bottom all notes at the current position are affected and not the selected notes... (Try to create a velocity ramp on a snare-roll with other drum sounds in the same midi event, the velocity of all notes are adjusted, not just the selected notes).
But sure, there's no 'perfect' app but all of them are improving all the time which is nice
The other day, I tried to add pitch bend automation to a MIDI note, but I realized that I had no reference of the original pitch value. Is it possible to show the original pitch so I can draw the proper curve?
I also like the way Xequence 2 handles program change messages. It actually shows you an icon with the PC number at the beginning of the clip. You need a magnifying glass to see the little dot that represents the PC number in the Cubasis 3 MIDI piano roll! Again, there doesn't seem to be any reference. It's just a tiny dot at the far left of the window. How do I know what PC number this represents?
Agree with the sentiments above.
I find using a third party electronic stylus helps.
I do wish the modifiers on the piano roll had the option of being placed on the right side as tricky to use if you are left-handed (like many musicians are). Alternatively just being able to ‘lock’ the modifier rather than holding it down (like in NS2) would be v helpful.
I am increasingly using NS2 for all my MIDI recording/editing then piping it into C3.
Hi @chisel316,
Thanks for your message!
So far we are unaware of gesture issues with Cubasis.
Please share a few clips with us which visualizes the problems, so we can comment about it.
Thanks!
Best wishes,
Lars
IMHO no DAW is quicker/easier than NS2 for MIDI editing. I have recorded and arranged entire songs without ever stopping playback. Only one thing missing for me… 😶
I needed to get used to the workflows and they are basically good for me. The only thing that is difficult is when you are zoomed out of the arrangement a lot and the parts are small. Then it is quite hard to hit the correct spot (see post of Janosax) at the part to perform the operation you want to do, even with a pencil. So I always have to zoom in first, do the operation and zoom out again. When zoomed out a lot its virtually impossible for me to open the piano roll editor to see the notes by double tapping on the part.
I’d also like to add a proposal. It’s quite tiring to duplicate parts or notes. The copy/paste function is good for duplicate stuff to modify it. For a better usability to just duplicate notes I’d prefer that you could just extend the length of the part by dragging its side and then the notes in this part are automatically duplicated.
@MobileMusic : Thoughts ?
Can you paste a reference to a MIDI event so if you change the source event, all references get updated automatically?
