What FX on Signal Chain for Recording My Own Samples in AUM

I want to record samples in AUM for personal use, basically hitting anything around that makes a cool sound, and record it AUM. A condenser mic as the input, either through audio/midi interface, or my simple mic interface, but I’m curious what FX I should add in my signal chain to get the best possible recording? I have Brusfri on there. maybe a gain too? Is that all I really need to get a decent quality sample recorded, maybe EQ too? I know it depends on other elements, but I’m focusing on the AUM set up, I was hoping to create a template in AUM so I can just reuse it anytime I want to sample something.

I was hoping someone out there did this, and could share their fx signal chain for recording samples in AUM? Something simple, I’m not doing multi-velocities and articulations, just some one shots of random things to add into my music. Doesn’t have to be radio quality but good enough to use. Any tips, thoughts? I guess like a field recording fix signal chain would work as well. Thanks.

  • For quick and dirty field recordings, I use Brusfri and Audio Damage ChannelStrip.
For extremely quiet sources, sometimes I add apeSoft Gain Pan, JAX Make Louder, and Amazing Noises Limiter.

    Sometimes I just use FieldScaper.

Magic Death Eye Stereo makes everything sound better though great tube/circuit emulation.
It's not cheap. It's generically a compressor so you could insure you don't clip the signal
    or get too quiet.

There are some other compressor/limiter products that are cheaper and ToneBoosters FX are pretty good.

For a mono input Spatializer might be great to create more of a image to the recordings.

Brusfri is truly amazing code to remove the noise floor. Good choice.

  • Thank you @ocelot & @McD both great suggestions

  • Personally when I'm recording samples I always keep them as dry and true to the source as possible so I can manipulate them more freely after the fact

Quick question, so do you just record straight into a mic, then alter afterwards, or do you add anything to the signal chain to ensure a good clean starting point?

Same here.. I capture sounds in their wild state using a Zoom H1, then I clean them up and compress to taste.

Great to know, I truly appreciate all the input. I record things but never really recorded specifically for sampling or field recordings specifically for music production so it’s good to hear what some of you do. Thanks.
